| | | After School Program: STREAM Lab Brings Newcomer Students Together to Learn and Grow | | TLC is wrapping up another fabulous year of the “STREAM Lab” after school program at Fay Elementary. In this program, sponsored by San Diego Unified’s Office of Children and Youth in Transition and facilitated by experienced TLC Teaching Consultants, up to 40 refugee students in grades TK-5 have experienced an array of integrated STREAM (Science Technology Reading Engineering Arts and Math) activities along with a heavy emphasis on Social Emotional Learning and English Language Development. Students in STREAM Lab enjoy a range of hands-on activities and projects in which they are encouraged to make choices, be creative, and take risks. The benefits for the students are extensive and the students are highly engaged and motivated. As one third grader put it, | |
"I have a really good time here, I wish we could come here every day, I'm very happy when I'm here and sad when there is time for us to go home." | | | |
Special Visitor:
We were delighted to have nationally renowned teacher and author Marilyn Burns visit the STREAM Lab program when she was in town. Marilyn loved engaging with the diverse and enthused students and appreciated the skills and warmth of the TLC Teaching Consultants. Marilyn is a long-time supporter of The Teaching and Learning Collaborative; we are greatly indebted to her as an educational role model and sponsor.

| | TLC High School Scholars Look to the Future | | Our amazing housing-insecure high school scholars continue to inspire. As they head toward graduation, independence and adulthood, these bright and talented students are taking stock of their choices. This TLC pilot program, sponsored by the Lucky Duck Foundation, offers coaching, tutoring, and small group work to navigate the complications of life – including financial literacy, applying for scholarships, making medical appointments, interviewing for jobs, and preparing for college and career. | |
The High School Scholars have also shown great enthusiasm for all things food - planning, budgeting, prepping, and eating - which has become a regular part of their weekly meetings (as pictured above with their UCSD PAL Mentor, Noah).
Our graduating seniors have been working hard but lack the resources to participate in prom, senior day, yearbooks, and more. Working with TLC Teaching Consultants, the scholars created a fundraising campaign to help them make the most of this milestone. Please donate what you can to these hardworking seniors.
| | TLC Book Club: Relational Inclusivity is a Classroom Game Changer | | If students enjoy their time together in the classroom will their learning improve? The answer is a resounding YES! An increasing body of research shows that the social-emotional aspects of students’ school experience have a big impact on their academic performance. A new book, Relational Inclusivity in the Elementary Classroom, co-authored by Executive Board Member, Caren Holtzman (with Drs. Christoforos Mamas and Shana Cohen), was the focus of a recent series of TLC book club meetings in which local teachers and researchers met to discuss inclusion and ways to foster robust friendship networks in the classroom. These sessions, held in the TLC classroom space, have become a sought-after forum for researchers and local educators to think about ways to broaden thinking about what makes for successful education. Local teachers Linda Salamanca of Logan Memorial Education Complex and Marissa Funk of High Tech Elementary Mesa helped to facilitate the discussion, making the TLC Book Club a true research-practice partnership. TLC believes that providing innovative ideas and support to teachers is essential to providing high quality education opportunities to underserved students. Therefore activities like the TLC Book Club is one of its core activities. | | Happy Educators at TLC Book Club Meeting | |

| | TLC Profile: Eddie Gallagher “Gets ‘em Stoked” | |
If education is the switch that engages a child’s inner light, then TLC Teaching Consultant Eddie Gallagher might be the wiring. Eddie began with TLC a couple years ago as a contracted teaching artist for our Level Up program, and since then stayed on for other residences and grew to work with TLC’s after school Stream Lab at Fay Elementary and High School Scholars Program, among other roles. Involvement with TLC is very rewarding, Eddie said, as he’s able to work with students from several underserved communities including the housing insecure and refugees.
“That’s something I can say I do with pride,” he said. “At the end of the day, kids are kids are kids,” no matter their circumstances. Eddie enjoys working with TLC because “they put so much stock and confidence in us as teachers and artists and people in general. They validate us and it encourages us to spread that validation to the students.”
