TNEC Annual Advisory Board Meeting 3/15

On Tuesday, March 15th, TNEC's Advisory Board met to reflect on last year's challenges and look ahead to come up with innovative ideas we could bring to the classroom.

We started our meeting with a panel discussion on Training Challenges and Lessons during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We were fortunate to have the following panelists from around the training industry:

Janet Womachka-Civil Service Employees Association; Sean Ryan-OSHA Training Institute Education Center in Manchester, NH; Gary Gustafson-Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR); Andrew Palhof, OSHA, New Hampshire, and Dave Coffey-TNEC facilitated the group.

One thing was blaringly obvious. Everyone moved their courses to online and in fact are still running a majority of their courses online. Test taking had to be done through DocuSign, and Checking ID's in breakout rooms. There was a lot of discomfort with change, but with that discomfort came a new business model for most of these training providers. So they are grateful. They weathered the storm and are continuing virtual courses, along with hybrid, and now traditional classroom based instruction. The Pandemic allowed them to expand their offerings beyond their region, which was never thought of before. So we learned this wasn't all doom and gloom but opportunity.

Mass will need to double worker training in changing economy, report says

A new report by the Future of Work Commission, which is made up of 17 legislators, business and labor leaders, says Massachusetts needs to double the rate at which it's training skilled workers.

"We need to do this essentially right now," said Sen. Eric Lesser, who co-chaired the commission. "In fact, we’re already behind in terms of how much dislocation there has been."

TNEC Applies for Funding for Offshore Wind Safety Training

TNEC-CSEA has applied for funding from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to provide OSHA 30-hour construction safety and general industry training, virtual and in-person, to university students seeking employment in the offshore wind energy industry, offshore wind supply chain companies (particularly to managers and supervisors), and to participants in workforce development career centers. The purpose of this training is to enhance the capacity of the workforce and fill existing education gaps by offering OSHA certification training.
