What has our Education Team been up to?

On March 4th, we welcomed a new team member, Qyn Byrne, to the St. Louis Aquarium Foundation Educator family! With the increase of classes for our H2O Friends program, outreach, and other Aquarium field trips going on, we are excited to have Qyn help serve our students and community at the Aquarium and within the greater St. Louis area!

Our education team is looking forward to this season, as they will be working with multiple groups every day! We love seeing all of the students' enthusiasm when they are in the Aquarium or learning during an education class, so here is a quick snapshot of all that is happening education-wise!

  • On Friday, April 5th, the Education team had their first outreach program with the Saint Louis Art Museum! We look forward to continuing our programming at the SLAM!

  • Our educators have already had two successful Girl Scout overnights and are excited for the many more to come!

  • The Aquarium will be hosting the St. Louis Science Leaders April meeting for STEM curriculum developers, educators, and other science-led community leaders to join and discuss how to continue best serving our community.

  • Our educators have been going off-site to provide outreach education programming to schools, organizations, and special events, bringing animals and inspiration with them!

  • A Foundation Educator will now be taking the ambassador animal stage Monday through Friday from 2pm-3pm. Come say hello to them as they exhibit and educate the public alongside some of our wonderful terrestrial animal ambassadors!

Camp Fins & Friends summer camp is still open!

Don't forget to sign-up for our aquatic themed summer camp, Camp Fins & Friends, before sessions fill up! Get ready for an otter-ly amazing summer where campers, ages 7 to 12, will learn about and get to see our aquatic animals, think critically about conservation issues, participate in fun activities on these topics, AND get to enjoy the attractions at St. Louis Union Station.

Camp Fins & Friends features five unique session themes that rotate weekly to keep every new and returning camper engaged. Sign up for one (or multiple) of our ten available one-week sessions before spots are filled!

Raingarden Opening

We are excited to announce that our raingarden is in the works to be open to guests! This season, we have received plants and equipment with the help from Stream Teams United and are working on reopening our green space by introducing new plants, as well as starting a Vermicomposting tower.

Yesterday, April 15th, our Foundation team started the planting process! We will introduce ten new species of native plants into our pollinator rain garden; one being Lanceleaf Coreopsis, a Keystone Species, which alone supports seven species of caterpillars and 22 species of bees! Along with this, we have put a suet cage in place, which holds material to support birds when building their nests, a bird bath bubbler to prevent mosquitoes and attract birds, a birdhouse, and a toad and frog hut.

In the upcoming weeks, we will work with our partners at Metropolitan Sewer District to include signage about rain gardens, composting, pollinators and native plants. The next time you visit the Aquarium make sure to check out our new and improved raingarden!
