TESL DurhamDUR 
Spring Conference: Mental Health

Date: Saturday April 8
Time: 9 am - 1 pm
Location: Oshawa Civic Recreation Centre

The presentation by David Clarke from Durham Mental Health Services will cover:
  • A brief opening on mental illness and stigma
  • Information on how organizations can promote good mental health among their members
  • Information on how to support an emotionally distressed person
  • Information about DMHS' Crisis Response services, which are the Ministry-of-Health-funded crisis services for the region (24/7 telephone support, mobile visits, crisis beds and more)
Following the presentation will be a networking activity session for guests. A light meal and refreshments will be provided.

Join TESL Toronto as it gets keyed up about shameless employment self-promotion. At "Pitch Perfect" you'll not only learn to hit all the right notes in describing what you do, and what you offer to employers, you'll also get a chance to knock that pitch right out of the park in our Field of Dreams job fair. The event will include:
  • A seminar on crafting the perfect elevator pitch presented by Katina Deichsel, a renowned and dynamic Speed Networking Trainer
  • Field of Dreams job fair and networking event that will include guests such as:
    • Private language schools with current and upcoming employment opportunities
    • Companies that are actively hiring tutors and teachers
    • Representatives from the TDSB to talk about current openings and the hiring process
    • Career coaches and employment specialists
    • ELT professionals from not-for-profit service providers
    • IELTS assessment professionals

Spring Conference: #i3PHE Unleash your Creativity

"Unleash Your Creativity" is the theme for PHE's spring conference. The keynote address will be delivered by Nathaniel Barr, professor of Creativity and Creative Thinking at Sheridan College. He has published scientific articles on the psychology of creativity, moral judgment, belief, and the intersection of thinking and technology. Nathaniel has taught courses on creativity, psychology, cognition, memory, and neuroscience, and will deliver his talk as well as his workshop on the nature of our minds and how to make the most of them.
 
There will be 15 sessions (including 6 technology workshops) offered throughout the day, covering a range of topics of interest to both experienced and new instructors as well as administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to network over brunch and coffee. Wear your creative hats - there will be opportunities to wear them!  
 
Those who attend the full day will be entitled to 5 hours of PD.

Spring PD Workshop and AGM

The TESL Kingston spring PD workshop and AGM will feature a panel presentation of three refugee sponsorship groups discussing their experiences sponsoring refugee families in Kingston.

Spring Conference: achieving Excellence, discovering Strategies, pursuing Learning

TESL Niagara's spring conference offers something for everyone. Ken Lackman's presentation, Colligation: The Way Grammar Should be Taught will be of interest to those in both LINC and academic sectors. Patrice Palmer will discuss the timely topic, From Teacher to Teacherpreneur: how to monetize your professional skills and Diane Ramathan will present on the new Tutela redesign. In addition, there will be a PBLA Drop-In. Interested PBLA classroom instructors can network with colleagues from various sites to compare notes, get new ideas and share experiences. This is an opportunity for LINC/ESL instructors to get valuable insight and PBLA strategies in an informal, collaborative atmosphere. The AGM will also be held during the conference.

A hot breakfast will be served and door prizes will be offered to lucky attendees.

Those who attend will be entitled to 3.5 hours of PD.

Spring Conference: Evidence-based Assessment

TESL London's spring conference will feature plenary speaker Thomas S.C. Farrell, professor of Applied Linguistics at Brock University. The event also includes a choice of 8 sessions, a technology session in a fully equipped lab, and lunch. Parking is free for this event.

Annual General Meeting and Spring Professional Development Day

Join TESL Ottawa for its Annual General Meeting and Spring Professional Development Day.  Mohammad Hashemi, teacher, author, editor and translator brought down the house at the winter event last year with his energetic and fascinating workshop (The Art of Learning The Science of Learning).  He will be back by popular demand on May 13th to undoubtedly wow the crowd with his keynote address: Language Learning and Technology; Advantages, Limitations, and Best Practices.  His presentation will be followed by the TESL Ottawa AGM and a choice of two great workshops by Mike Simpson (Turn it On: Creating Digital Capability in the Classroom) and Shafaque Mulla (Unlock Learning Abilities - Help Your Learners Thrive).  Attendants will also have the opportunity to view two poster presentations put on by Carleton University grad students (during registration and break time) and a chance to win a free TESL Ontario Membership!

Spring PD Event: Thinking Critically

Critical thinking is an important part of language acquisition and application as L2 learners apply judgment skills to daily functions in English. While critical thinking is often associated with higher academic studies, it also has its place in workplace and public service English as well as in the increasingly complex online environment. Keynote speaker, Tyson Seburn, will address how thinking critically has multiple applications in communicative contexts. Prof. Seburn is Lead Instructor, Critical Reading & Writing; Assistant Academic Director at University of Toronto. There will be 6-8 morning and afternoon workshop sessions connected to the theme. Participants may network over lunch and coffee breaks and an academic publisher will be on hand to sell print merchandise.

Those who attend the full day will be entitled to 5 hours of PD.

TOCON17 Spring Conference: Rejuvenation - Try Something New

Experience TESL Toronto's annual spring conference, TOSCON17.  The Friday evening portion will be at Victoria College, University of Toronto.  Enjoy cocktails and networking before heading off to your chosen sessions in which rejuvenation will be the theme.  Return on Saturday for more great sessions, networking, (breakfast and lunch included), and don't miss the plenary speaker, Chuck Sandy who will close the conference.
