Later this spring, we are looking forward to our early deadline for high school applicants on April 2 at noon, and our regular deadline for high school and college applicants on May 1 at noon. If you know someone who could benefit from the scholarship, please spread the word.

Dylan Young, Worcester Polytechnic Institute '28, is an example of how word-of-mouth referrals can change lives. In his own words, "I heard about the Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship from a friend that was in the class above me [in high school]. She had applied to the scholarship and was named a recipient. She encouraged me to apply when I was a senior. I was very excited to learn that I was named as a recipient. This took a lot of stress off of me, as I would have less of a financial burden going into college.

At Worcester Polytechnic Institute, I am able to be involved in numerous activities including the Student Alumni Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a research lab assistant, and a Community Advisor. I am so fortunate that I am able to be a part of all of these organizations. Without the Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship, I don’t think I would be able to have the opportunity to take part in these groups. Being involved in these groups has given me the opportunity to give back to my community through planning campus wide events, lab tours for engineering majors, and helping transition to college life."

Sergio Montufar, University of Connecticut Storrs '26, has a similar story. He shares, "I first heard about the scholarship from my friend Nichole, a previous recipient who attends the University of Connecticut with me. I have known her since our freshman year of high school, and she shared the opportunity with me the summer before we began college. Nichole has always been someone who looks for ways to uplift others, and her decision to tell me about this scholarship made a lasting impact. Although I spent my first two years at UConn’s Stamford campus and was not yet eligible to apply, I kept the scholarship in mind. When I transferred to the main campus in Storrs, I applied right away and was honored to receive the award, which is something that would not have been possible without Nichole's encouragement.

Receiving this scholarship has meant far more to me than financial support. Pursuing higher education as a first-generation college student has required not only academic dedication but also significant financial responsibility. This scholarship eased that burden and allowed me to focus more fully on my studies, leadership roles, and professional development without constantly worrying about expenses. Beyond the financial aspect, the scholarship has served as a powerful vote of confidence in my potential. It reminded me that others believe in my goals and my ability to make an impact. That encouragement has motivated me to continue striving for excellence, both in the classroom and in my efforts to give back to my community. In many ways, receiving this scholarship has reinforced my commitment to one day supporting students the way I have been supported."
