Gardener Musings

An extra day this year, what are we going to do with it? I hear frequently that we don’t have enough time to do everything we want to do, so here’s a boost! Ben Franklin is to have said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”

Speaking of planning, our backyard bluebird couple is doing some planning. Sunday morning at breakfast, we noticed Charlie and Chessie Bluebird were on the fence near a new bluebird house. Apparently, they had just gotten their preapproval for a loan. They seemed nervous, especially Charlie. He was closer to the house; perhaps he had seen the ad? Chessie went in the door, and as soon as she disappeared, he hopped down the fence a couple of feet away from the door. He had his feathers all fluffed up and kept hopping back and forth. He was worried. As soon as Chessie popped out the door, he jumped! But she didn’t run him down, nor did we hear any irritated chatter.

I think Charlie was afraid he was being too cheap. He wanted the best for his family but didn’t want to look like an overworked dad all his life, either. You could tell he liked to eat. Chessie wasn’t sure. She looked at the new house from all angles. She went inside a few times and sat on the doorstep. Charlie just kept a healthy distance.

Monday morning looked a little more promising. We could tell Charlie was getting more relaxed. He was sitting on the birdhouse roof as Chessie went inside. I expect they put an offer on it. We hope they get it. Couples that get along well together always make good neighbors.

I wish you a bluebird sighting today,

Customer Spotlight

A local customer who craves the Proven Winner houseplants told us this:

"I like to use Proven Winner's plants in my outdoor garden. Last year, upon stopping at Sunny Meadows, I was so happy to see Proven Winner's houseplants. Having trouble finding nice and healthy houseplants, I knew that these houseplants would be beautiful, healthy, and easy to take care of, just like the outdoor plants."

Now's the Time

Are your plants overgrown? Do any bushes need rejuvenated? Spring is just around the corner, and now’s the time to prune many things. A sharp bypass pruner is the best tool for most kinds of pruning work, but if you encounter a branch too big for this tool, use bypass loppers.

Cut shrub stems back to just above a big bud or set of buds. Aim to remove no more than 1/3 of the plant when pruning. Cut your perennials down to about two inches from the ground.

Here are a few suggestions of plants that should be trimmed at this time of year.

  • Arborvitae
  • Butterfly Bush
  • Bluebeard
  • Boxwood
  • False Holly
  • Gold mop cypress
  • Hinoki Cypress
  • Holly
  • Japanese Maple
  • Japanese Spirea
  • Liriope
  • Nandina
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Panicle Hydrangeas (Don’t trim Bigleaf Hydrangeas at this time)
  • Privet
  • Pussy willows (but you won’t have as many blooms in the spring)
  • Red Maple
  • Roses
  • Summersweet

Behind the Scenes

The excitement is bubbling over around here. Truckloads of plants are arriving almost daily—fruit trees, topiaries, shade trees, shrubs, perennials, succulents, flowers, and more. We also opened our cold frame and aroused the sleeping beauties that had spent the winter sealed up to protect them from the cold. It's so much fun to see green and growing things again!
