Spring Skin Tips Part 2 Cleansing
Last week we wrote about the needs for hydration in spring time, and how our skin has different needs during this time. Our skin also has different needs for cleansing. Spring has arrived (in the US) and Summer is on its way.
In a future article, we will go over tonics/toners :)
The kinds of products we apply to our skin in warmer weather, can often be very different than what we apply during colder weather (fall and winter)
During spring and summer the air is warmer which makes oil production increase for most people. For those with dry skin this can be a bonus, because they may find their skin is now "normal" or less dry than before. For oily skin this can really cause the skin to get even oilier. For acne prone skin this can equal more acne than before.
Oily/Acne Prone
This type of skin needs a good cleanser that will take off oil and makeup, but without disturbing the barrier or stripping the skin of its oils. If a cleanser strips this type of skin too much, it can pump out more oil in order to compensate. More oil on top of already oily skin in summer can = more acne. Not fun!
Best choices for this type:
- Jen's Green Tea Shea Cleanser (Gentle)
- Almond Enzyme Cleanser
- Takrai Lemongrass Cleanser
- Heather Blossom Cleanser
- Simply Clean Tea Tree Cleanser (Gentle)
If you don't wear makeup your best choices may be:
- Gentle Cleansing Gel (Antibacterial)
- Soothing Gel Cleanser followed with one of our Tonics
Dehydrated/Acne Prone
This type of skin needs a cleanser that will not strip the skin (causing it to be more dehydrated) but one that is still useful to acne prone skin. Dehydrated Skin is often a result of cleansers that are stripping, and excessive use of acids and or/exfoliation. Chlorinated water (water that isn’t filtered) and environmental factors can also contribute.
Best choices for this type if wearing makeup:
- Sensitive Cleansing Oil
- Blemish Prone Cleansing Oil
If not wearing makeup:
- Gentle Cleansing Gel (Antibacterial)
- Soothing Gel Cleanser followed with one of our Tonics
Rosacea/Oily (more rare) (often acne prone)
This type of rosacea is more rare, because most with rosacea skin are also very dehydrated/and or dry. This is because the same things that cause dehydration and dryness are the same things that set up in inflammation response in the Rosacea Skin Type. Rosacea skin is often a result of cleansers that are stripping, and excessive use of acids and or/exfoliation. Leading to inflammation in the skin, due to the barrier being compromised. Chlorinated water (water that isn’t filtered) and environmental factors can also contribute.
Best choices for this type if wearing makeup:
- Super Sensitive Cleansing Oil
- Blemish Prone Cleansing Oil
If not wearing makeup:
- Soothing Gel Cleanser
- Soothing Creme Cleanser
Rosacea/Dehydrated (sometimes Acne Prone)
This is the most common with Rosacea, and often can present with acne as well. Rosacea is often caused from the same things mentioned above - strong acids, exfoliation and stripping Cleansers. Rosacea prone skin that is also acne prone, can also find that moisturizers/creams can cause issues (including clogging and cystic acne) but also it seals heat into the skin so they can find that this makes rosacea and inflammation worse. In fact I do not suggest using any of these, while healing your skin from Rosacea. Chlorinated water (water that isn’t filtered) and environmental factors can also contribute.
Best choices for this type if wearing makeup:
- Super Sensitive Cleansing Oil
- Blemish Prone Cleansing Oil
If not wearing makeup:
- Soothing Gel Cleanser
- Soothing Creme Cleanser
Dry and or Dry/Aging (NOT acne prone)
For this skin type - Cleansing Oils or Cream Cleansers are your best bet! Dry skin should always avoid surfactant/soap type cleansers, excessive acids and excessive exfoliation. (this can only contribute)
Best choices for this type if wearing makeup:
- Super Sensitive Cleansing Oil
- Sensitive Cleansing Oil
- Creamy Cleanser (any of them)
If not wearing makeup:
- Soothing Gel Cleanser (possibly with a few drops of oil) like Borage, Tamanu, RoseHip or Evening Primrose)
- Soothing Creme Cleanser
- If also acne prone
- this becomes just a bit more complicated, as you cannot use a cream. In this case I suggest:
- Super Sensitive Cleansing Oil
- Sensitive Cleansing Oil
- Soothing Gel Cleanser with a few drops of oil (like Passion Fruit, Borage or Evening Primrose)
