Spring Awards Night
Good afternoon, athletics families and welcome to our Spring Sports Awards Virtual Edition.

Today we will be honoring both individual and team accomplishments from the season. Read on to hear more about the Hornets' achievements!
Because our season was cut short, we need your help in gathering photos from our abbreviated season. If you have any team or action photos from the SPRING season that you are willing to share, please upload them to this public folder by Tuesday, May 19 so that we can create a slideshow on each team's web page. Click here to add photos . Please note, all photos uploaded will be available to the public and shared on our athletics website.

Awards, certificates, and Varsity Letters can be picked up in the Fall from the front office and Seniors can pick up their awards with their diploma in early June (more details to follow from the NHS Admin Team).

"The Spring 2020 season for baseball was much anticipated. Starting when the Class of 2020 was getting ready to enter High School, there was so much work going on about the improvements to our facility through Measure G. So many of the athletes and parents spent many hours and days working with the Novato Unified School District to help get our baseball field some attention. Thanks to the Novato School Board members, we were so fortunate to have their vote in favor of turning our field into one that is going to be the envy of our league. We felt that the biggest hurdle we faced heading in to this season, was if our field would be ready for our season.

As it turned out, the field was not our to be our biggest issue. The Novato High School Administration AND our Athletic Director, Ms. Michele Sanner, was able to help us secure the San Jose Middle School baseball field. SJMS was going to facilitate our team for practice in preparing for competition.

The 2020 season was going to be a special season for our coaching staff. This is the Class in which they came to Novato High the same time that I arrived to coach the baseball team. This was by far the largest class of baseball players, with solid, talented athletes. It is so heartbreaking to see the season and school year end on such a devastating note. Who would have thought that a "virus" would affect everyone so much. We came into this season with so much promise. Every one of the opposing coaches had talked about how this Novato High baseball team, the 2020 Novato Baseball Hornets, were going to be a team to be reckoned with. We will all look back and wonder.................

At this time, I would like to express my gratitude to the Novato High School Administration for their support and assistance in allowing us to provide a solid baseball program to these student athletes. I am also grateful to our Athletic Director, Michele Sanner, for her support and guidance over these last 3 seasons. Michele made it so seamless in our ability to provide a program that produced a CIF recognized Baseball Team with exceptionally over achieving and well educated athletes. I would also like to thank Mr. Steve DeHart, our Athletic Trainer, who has provided exceptional service to help our athletes stay on the field and engaged with our team, while receiving medical attention to work through sports injuries, AND fitness guidance to keep many of our players healthy for competition.

I would also like to thank the coaches who helped develop these student-athletes into excellent competitors. New to our program, coaches Scott Osder and Michael Crandell introduced a collegiate level throwing program and strength and conditioning program. Coach Bret Correnti for keeping our team motivated and focused.

I would like to recognize the Seniors for their hard work and commitment to teamwork. Hawk Kee, a 4-year player who was instrumental in having our pitching staff prepared. Jacob Ruiz, a 4-year player with an outstanding glove at first-base. Evan McLane, a transfer student athlete who became a 2-year player on our varsity team who brought speed and a solid glove to our outfield. Corey Denton, a 4-year player and a 2-year varsity player who brought speed, strength, determination and a positive attitude to the team along with his versatility to play outfield and pitch. Gavin Gilkerson, a 4-year player, 2-years on varsity, and a solid bat to go along with his excellent outfield skills. Jack McMann (Pitcher of the Year), a 4-year player, a 2-year starting pitcher and ace of our staff on varsity, a Team Captain who dazzled opposing hitters with his funky style on the mound. Jack was one of the leading pitchers in the MCAL. Miles Elkins (Most Improved Player), a 4-year player, and 3-year starting catcher on the varsity team. Miles improved his play each season, and was a leader in the dugout.

I would also like to recognize Hunter Gray (Most Inspirational Player), the best gift that we received from San Marin High School. Hunter played his first 2 years at San Marin, then was a 2-year starting 1st baseman for our varsity team and a team captain. Hunter brought skills to our program with speed, versatility and power. Hunter continually cheered his teammates on from all over the baseball diamond. Nico Haralambidis, a 4-year player and 3-year starting varsity infielder. Nico worked tirelessly at his skills as a middle infielder and pitcher along with his ability to hit towards the top of the order. Neil Knight (Gold Glove), a 4-year player and 3-year starter on the varsity team. Neil played EVERY position on the baseball diamond. Neil had speed, a great glove and the ability to "place" the baseball when at bat. Neil was a runner up for All-League honors in 2019, and was on his way to become an All-Leaguer this season. Tassos Foster (Most Valuable Player), a 4-year player and 3-year starter on the varsity team and All-League Infielder. Tassos worked tirelessly to improve his game ever since arriving at Novato High. Tassos was a solid infielder and became a solid and feared hitter in our line-up, delivering a 3-rbi triple in our game against Analy. Tassos is bringing his solid game and positive attitude to the Willamette University as a recruited infielder. Lastly, but not least, Conor Mack (Player of the Year), a 4-year player and 3-year starting center fielder on the varsity team. Conor brought speed and athleticism to our squad, and was having a break out season, leading the league with a .562 batting average.

As we say good-bye to these outstanding seniors, I just want to send them off by saying thank-you for your dedication to our team, your representation of your school, and the respect and admiration you have shown over and over again for your teammates, coaches, school and family. I will miss each and every one of you as you move on to your next journey. I invite all of you to return any time and bring some knowledge and wisdom to the future Hornet baseball players. A true Hornet will find a way to take the time to "give back".

To the 2021 returners; Evan Black - catcher - '23, Derek Bartram - outfielder/pitcher/infielder - '22, Lucas Hines - outfielder '21, Jake Tirk - pitcher/first baseman '21, Aidan Black - infielder/pitcher '21, and Jackson Gremmels - pitcher/infielder '21, you have some big shoes to fill and several positions to earn. I look forward to watching your continual growth on the baseball diamond." - Coach Don MacQuarrie

"Despite the obvious disappointment of not being able to play our entire season, this inaugural run for Novato High's eSports team was a resounding success. I cannot express how proud I am that these student-athletes came together on short notice to do what they love to do while playing for their school. One of my favorite memories of our season was when some of our Rocket Leaguers were in a particularly tense match - everyone, even the ones who don't play that particular game, were crowding around, and when the eHornets pulled off the last second victory, you would have thought that they had won state, based off all the cheering. These student-athletes showed all of the qualities that we love in sports: poise, teamwork, sportsmanship, and mentorship. I could not be more proud of this first season, and I cannot wait to see how this program develops in years to come." - Coach Danny Kambur

"The 2020 season was shaping up to be a great season for the program and the excitement level was high among the players and coaches. After a scrimmage against Petaluma the season started with a tough loss to a talented Piedmont team followed by two good hard fought wins over Cardinal Newman and Bishop O’Dowd to end the short season. While the season did not end the way that we all had hoped it would, there were still a lot of moments to be proud of and cause to be excited for the team's future. The leadership skills shown by the players who were always willing to help the less experienced players get better at practice is exciting. The work ethic and athleticism of the newer players exemplified by the countless reps they put in at practice to improve is exciting. Overall I was very grateful to be able to be a part of this team in 2020 and I know that the future is very bright for these athletes and the Novato lacrosse program as a whole." - Coach Fredette

Varsity Boys Lacrosse
Mike Pardi returns for his 3 rd run as head coach for the Novato High Boy’s Lacrosse program. Mike has had the pleasure and opportunity to coach many of the current players since they were in 1 st and 2 nd grade. Early on, the coaching strategy emphasized developing a team environment through friendships, camaraderie, and hard work. Marcus Rome, who has co coached with Mike for close to a decade, continues to provide his knowledge and support in mentoring these young athletes.

In Spring 2019, the NHS Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse lost the NCS Division 2 Championship game. The team worked hard in offseason to prepare for the 2020. Many student athletes participated in offseason select lacrosse programs as well as a preseason functional strength training program put on by Five Points Fitness. On the first day of tryout for lacrosse, only 31 players attended. Through recruitment, management, and team buzz on campus, almost 10 brand new players came out to play spring lacrosse.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse was off to an impressive start. Prior to shutdown, the team was 5-0 and was one of the top ranked lacrosse programs in Bay Area. The team’s home opener was on the road against defending NCS Div. 2 champion Piedmont, the Hornets completely dominated the Highlanders 9-2. The following week, Novato beat Justin Siena 13-4 followed by a back to back match with the 2019 NCS Div. 1 runner up, Marin Academy. The previous year, the Wildcats beat up on the Hornets, 18-5. In 2020, redemption was in the Hornets favor with a 13-4 victory. One of the shining moments of the season occurred with an amazing Busby to Busby pass and behind the back-shot goal! The bench and crowd went nuts. The following week, Novato played Casa Grande to a 9-6 victory and blew up Bishop O Dowd 15-8 in a high scoring affair.

In a shortened season, the Hornets dominated the scoreboard 73 total Goals scored vs. 28 goal against. 56 of the 73 goals were assisted, a 77% goal to assist ratio. The Hornet team philosophy is to push transition and move the ball as fast as possible. Most if not all the goals ended up in the sticks of the quick sharp shooting attackman, Seamus Busby, Braden Rome, and Kyle Decker. These 3 athletes accounted for 55% of total goals scored and were accountable for 70% of the assists.

Novato’s Midfield was light in numbers due to graduated players and current injuries. As a result, much of the Midfield legwork fell on the shoulders of a few. Griffin Cipriani sparked the team with his hustle and energy. Matt Decker, was a lightning bolt with his efforts up and down the field. Mack Carter was an unstoppable dodger and was constantly pushing transition and unloading power shots. Freshman, Owen Busby, stepped up and clearly showed he deserved a spot on the varsity team. JJ Moreno was responsible for taking draws on faceoff. Gavin Mc Micken got hurt in the first game and Bryce Callahan never got cleared to play.

A few first-time seniors were intrigued by the game and wanted to give lacrosse a try. The addition of Jayden Heinemann, Ale Lopez, Sam Lasarre & Ali Mosaufi energized the team and over time, each would have played a role on this team.
Defensively, our 5 defensemen were a strong, tight, and reliable crew. Captain Jackson Callahan lead the defense along with Dominick Pardi, Andrew McGrath, Lucas Talbott and Nick Poole. Cole Morris was a force between the pipes. If an opposing team wanted to score a goal, they were forced have to work extremely hard to get through the Hornet defense.

Matt Decker was clearly the team’s MVP! Matt is a tremendous athlete; he is able to run a mile in under 5 min 25 secs. Matt is 2-way starter(off/def), worked faceoffs wing, played man up, played man down, cleared the ball and essentially never came off the field. Matt was tied for the lead on the team with 26 points (14 G 12 ass). His balanced scoring illustrates how much of a team player Matt is. A well-deserved award for a hard-working student athlete who takes pride in his game.

Special thanks goes out to Michele Sanner for all her work and organization efforts. Thanks to the team manager Joan Busby for running a tight ship; she was constantly addressing team needs (recruiting new players) to ensure the boys lacrosse program was successful. Thanks to all the parent volunteers, especially Kris Cameron, Kelly Decker, Chris Carter, Glenn Poole & McGrath family who helped with all the on and off the field work.

A bittersweet ending for a team who was on a roll and looking to reset the pecking order within the MCAL. With only one experienced senior, Griffin Cipriani, the Hornets will move into next season as a top ranked team in both MCAL and NCS, Once the Boys Lax Hornets have an opportunity to get back on the field, they will appreciate and maximize the opportunity to play the best and fastest sport on the planet . - Coach Mike Pardi

JV Girls Lacrosse
"I was grateful to Coach the JV Girls for this season, they are a fantastic group of girls. They impressed me every practice with the effort the put into working on skills and plays. They came to each practice and games ready to play support each other and play as a team.

What really stuck me is the way that they came together as a team. We had many skill levels from accomplished to new players. The way the accomplished players, without me having to ask went and worked with the new player was fantastic. They are a joy to be around.

I would like to thank my Captains Maritza Briceno, Alexa Guillen and Citlally Catzin. I would like to recognize two players for their support:

Citlally Catzin, she set up the Team text Chat and worked on the Team Swag with Amy Sullivan. She did this without having to be asked and it was a huge relief to have her take care of this.

Vanessa Gonzales – She took the younger less skilled players and worked with them to improve their skills. She also lead by example. She is one of the better players on the team and showed up ready to practice – worked extremely hard in practice and games and was a joy to coach." - Coach Ben Oyle

"The girls varsity lacrosse season, short as it was, was filled with some tremendous highs and one tremendous low—the premature end of our season.

There is little doubt in either of the coach’s minds that these girls were poised to have an amazing season because they were growing together not only in their lacrosse skills but in their joy of playing with one another. With so many new faces on the team this year, this was no small feat and is a testament to the leadership and effort of the captains, seniors and other returning players.

As coaches, we felt blessed to work with such a wonderful group of young women and we know each will be successful in whatever they choose to put their hearts and minds to in the future!" - Coaches Dave Picardi & Scott Sullivan

"We started the first ever Open Pool for all NHS athletes in January. It was these extra days of sunshine, laughter and life talks that now feel so precious. We welcomed 60 swimmers to the 2020 NHS Swim Team! We have always believed that a team cannot only be measured by the Wins and Losses (however this year would have been quite a year for wins, records and best times!). This year we came together as a team sooner than in past years. Perhaps we were in some way preparing for a short season. Our MVP goes to each swimmer who has had to adjust to a new normal, one that none of us wanted. A special congratulations to our swimmers who will be continuing their swimming career in college: Maya McAuley – Carnegie Mellon, Corban McIntosh – UC Santa Barbara and Zach McIntyre – Duke. Our cheering and support follow you beyond the pool!" - Coach Denise McIntyre

“Although our season was brief it was great to work with all the gentlemen on the varsity boys tennis team. Having a mix of experienced and new to the game players the team really gelled together to get the most out of their practice and games. Team comradery was of upmost importance throughout our practices and matches which in turn created an atmosphere that all coaching staff, parents and team members could be proud of. Special mention to Seb Fiosy and Alessandra Barrera our seniors as they weren’t able to complete their final season. Both players wore the Novato Hornets uniform with pride over the years and I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors both on and off the court. The coaching staff and I look forward to building on the foundation created in this brief season and thank the team and parents for their commitment and support.”  - Coach Gavin Leon

"We have so much to celebrate for Varsity Boys Volleyball! From new players to returning vets, our team came together as one for an amazing, but short season. We had an exciting start to our season with a 4-1 record and were sad we couldn’t continue. One highlight of our season would have to be our 3-0 victory against Drake, whom we haven’t defeated in years! Another highlight of our season was our comeback in the San Marin match where we were down both physically and mentally, but our team pulled together, pulled through and earned that 3-2 victory.

It has been an immense pleasure to work with such an amazing group of young men. Coach B and I kind of got thrown into this position right before the start of the season, but we haven’t looked back since and couldn’t have imagined it any other way. We have absolutely loved the opportunity to coach and can’t wait to start again next season and continue to grow this awesome program. Although our season was cut short, we saw such growth, community amongst the boys, such good times, and way too many laughs to count.
We will miss our seniors dearly and hope they come back to practice with us!"
