Got Yourself Down?
Try Changing Your Self-Talk

by Alek Kopulsky, '19, HAWP Intern

Sometimes, we can be brutally unsympathetic to and even bully ourselves for failing to meet our own high standards. These self-deprecating thoughts come from a part of ourselves that needs to be nurtured and re-informed. Compassionate self-talk is a practice that can help us improve our self-image and build resiliency; it is warm, responsive, supportive, forgiving, and unconditional.

There is a well-known piece of advice for those with deprecating self-talk to instead speak to themselves as they would to a friend in need. Another suggestion is to think of self-deprecating thoughts as coming from a younger version of yourself that couldn’t critically examine the toxic messages fed to you growing up, and instead accepted and internalized them. You can correct these harmful ideas and re-inform your younger self through compassionate self-talk.

Or, imagine that a child you love says something negative about themself. You’d interject! The best response would be to have a conversation to help them assess the rationality of their comment. This should also be the case with ourselves. Over time, compassionate self-talk can help you address doubts, self-deprecating thoughts, and strong feelings with tenderness and reason.

Summer Sun Safety
Sun's out, shades out! The sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes of exposure, and all skin types are susceptible. You can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade, wearing sunglasses, and applying a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
