With spring arriving, we are excited to once again offer our Land-Based Learning Program at Caledonia in collaboration with the Indigenous Education Department of SD#57.
This is a great opportunity for educators in our community to bring their classes out for a full day of outdoor, experiential learning. The program is built around connecting students to the land through hands-on, place-based activities that support curriculum goals while incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.
Students rotate through three activity stations during the day, each running for approximately 45 minutes. Available activities include archery (hunting), medicinal plants with Jessica Field (gathering), shelter building (survival), food cache (storage), and nature scavenger hunts.
A typical day runs from a 9:30 am arrival through to early afternoon, with time for three sessions and lunch. We provide lesson plans, materials, and on-site support to help make the day run smoothly.
To create a strong learning experience, we recommend a shared delivery model:
- Teacher or EA leads one station (or Jessica Field if available)
- Indigenous Education Worker (IEW) leads one station
- Caledonia Nordic staff supports the third station
We offer on-site support for $6 per student, which covers materials, setup, and facilitation support.
Full-day bookings are strongly encouraged, as they allow students to fully engage in all three stations and get the most out of the experience. We are already seeing strong interest, so booking early is recommended to secure your preferred dates.
