Education, Climate, and Community: The Three Pillars of the Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative


The work of the Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative is centered on three pillars: education, climate, and community. Ranging from place-based education with local schools, research partnerships across the region, a robust volunteer community research program, and initiatives to interpret science through art, the Collaborative further spreads their vision to connect the beauty of people and place in a new way.

Golden Gate Biosphere Network Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment


Working in partnership with EcoAdapt, a climate adaptation and resilience focused non-profit based in Washington state, the Golden Gate Biosphere Network is undertaking a climate change vulnerability assessment to better understand the impact of climate change on the Bay Area. Landscape-level conservation efforts are at the heart of this project. Results will guide on-the-ground project work and long-term land management planning across the biosphere region.

Strengthening the Capacity of Biosphere Regions: An Update on the NAPECA Climate Internships


Interns in the Obtawaing Biosphere Region and Champlain-Adirondack Biosphere Network will help strengthen the transboundary collaborations between U.S. and Canadian Biosphere Regions and will help to build climate capacity across their respective biosphere regions and the USBN.

Scientist-in-the Park Internships Engage and Excite Youth


Elizabeth (Liz) Halasz has been working since November 2022 with the newly renamed Southern Appalachian Biosphere Cooperative on expanding the biosphere region’s recognition and partnerships in several states across Appalachia. The internship is one of eight National Park Service-sponsored internships placed in biosphere regions since 2018.

On March 28, 2023, the Network for Landscape Conservation’s Landscape Conservation in Action series featured the webinar “Biosphere Regions – Act Globally, Cooperate Locally.” Cliff McCreedy, Science Applications Coordinator with the NPS, and Samuel Cuthell, Golden Gate Biosphere Network Coordinator, reviewed how biosphere regions are learning to integrate socioeconomic and environmental concerns in their work and provided a case study from Golden Gate Biosphere Network for climate change vulnerability assessment.

Working Group to Elect New Leadership

The USBN Biosphere Working Group is the representative body with members of the 28 biosphere regions and partner organizations that communicate and deliberate on national issues affecting the USBN. The BWG will elect new members of the USBN Steering Committee at their June 7 meeting.
