Looking for a New Family Member? - Animal Adoptions Available Online
During the past year while dealing with the worldwide pandemic, the Yucca Valley Animal Shelter has continued to provide care and shelter for lost and stray pets. For unclaimed pets, the shelter was utilizing rescue partners and other shelters for the placement of these pets.

The Town of Yucca Valley is making animal adoptions easier by launching a pilot program for the placement of adoptable pets. This pilot program is initially focusing on placing our feline friends to successfully forever homes. If the pilot program is successful, the program will be expanded to include dogs and other animals housed at the shelter.

Pets are placed on the Adopt a Pet and Petfinder websites and are announced on the placed on the Animal Shelter's Facebook page, “Home at Last Adoptions – Yucca Valley Animal Shelter”. Interested adopters should contact the shelter and an adoption contract will be emailed to them. Should there be multiple interested adopters, the first completed contract returned to the shelter would take priority.

If you are interested in adopting on-line, please contact the Animal Shelter at 760-365-3111.

Trace No. 16471, otherwise known as Desert Vista Village, located on Palm Avenue south of the Best Western, has recently been revived with new housing starts.  Eight new single-family residential units are under construction. A total of 60 vacant lots remain in the 105- lot subdivision. Desert Vista Village is an age restricted development.

What is a Drywell?
Rainstorm events frequently deliver high volumes of flood waters in short period of time. During
heavy rainstorms, ponding in the traveled roadway can be difficult for motorists and cause problems for neighbors in vicinity to the flooding.

Cholla Avenue between Coyote Trail and Sunland Drive is one of those areas that experiences ponding issues. Standing water would remain for up to one week following the rain event.  Since water is no friend of petroleum-based asphalt concrete, damage to the roadway can occur.

Following reconstruction of the road with the recent wastewater project, the Town installed a drywell to collect storm water, thereby reducing standing water in the street. A concrete apron was poured to allow for proper drainage of the water into the drywell.

These Town efforts result in a safer roadway for the motoring public, reduced difficulties for surrounding property owners, and in extending the length of time the roadway can go without the necessity of maintenance efforts.
Little League Property Receives Much-Needed Maintenance
With the acquisition of the Tri-Valley Little League facility on September 15, 2020, the Yucca Valley Town Council continued to implement the Parks and Recreation Master Plan in providing sports fields for community recreation needs.

Since acquisition of the facility, a number of needs have been addressed in order to provide quality facility to the community including irrigation repairs; scalped, aerated and leveled seeded and top-dressed all fields; installation of new irrigation controllers, clock timers, master valve and flow meters, upgrade of field lighting control equipment, sewer connection, and various other minor upgrades.

The Town Council allocated $80,000 for the initial repairs for this facility from the Town’s Capital Projects Reserve Fund. The Town Council has also allocated this year’s Community Development Block Grant funds to the Tri Valley Little League facility, while the Town aggressively seeks other grant resources for this important infrastructure component of the Town’s recreation facilities.

The Yucca Trail/Palomar Avenue Intersection Improvements Project is entirely funded with Public Facility Development Impact Fees which are paid by new development projects. The anticipated construction costs for Yucca Trail/Palomar Avenue Intersection Improvements Project are $334,973.49.

Town Obtains $969,660 for Traffic Safety - Yucca Trail Project
Infrastructure needs within the Town include recreation facilities, streets, flood control, trails, bike routes and other public infrastructure facilities. As part of an aggressive approach to seeking outside financial resources, the Town secured grant funding through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) for the construction of Yucca Trail Safety Improvements. The HSIP program is a federally funded reimbursable grant program requiring a minimum 10% of local matching funds.

On June 20, 2017, the Town Council awarded the design services contract to Albert Webb Associates from Riverside, CA. Services provided by Albert Webb Associates included preparation of the environmental and design/engineering phases of the Yucca Trail Safety Improvement Project and preparation of bid ready construction documents in the amount of $149,482.

The project consists of widening Yucca Trail from Warren Vista Avenue to the west side of the Avalon/Palomar Avenue intersection to provide 8 foot shoulder on both the sides of Yucca Trail, 12 foot travel lanes, and a 12 foot center striped median with left turn movements into the intersections along Yucca Trail.   The project also includes the widening of Warren Vista both north and south of Yucca Trail to include left hand turn and through lanes.

At the Council Meeting of October 20, 2020, the Town Council awarded the construction contract to Matich Corp. Construction began on November 30th, 2020 and the estimated completion date is early March of 2021.

The total construction cost is $1,383,301.31 (including all contract contingency and additional project costs). The cost to the Town for the construction of Yucca Trail Safety Improvements is $413,641.31 with $969,660 in HSIP Grant funds.
