Service Department Update

Salt Operations

This past winter season, Northfield Center Township used 333 tons of salt to help keep roads safe during snow and ice events, including 175 tons used in 2026. Through the Township’s participation in a Council of Governments (COG) purchasing program, salt was secured at a reduced cost, and Trustees approved additional purchases to ensure there was no shortage. We thank our Service Department for their continued dedication to plowing and salting roads, and residents for their cooperation during winter weather.

Ditch & Drainage Projects Underway

Bayberry Drainage Improvement Project: After years of planning, this project is now in the construction phase. This project is designed to reduce surface water issues and improve road conditions on Bayberry Road. With support from a Summit County grant, the project is expected to cost around $900,000 and is anticipated to be completed by July 2026, weather permitting.

Dorwick Ditch Project: The purpose of this project is to enhance drainage and water quality in the Brandywine Creek and Cuyahoga River Watershed. Residents in Brandywine Estates and Beacon Hills have been notified about upcoming drainage work and are encouraged to report any water-related concerns to the Township.

Old Town Hall Ground Lease

At a recent meeting, the Northfield Center Township Board of Trustees approved a one-year agreement with Cresco Real Estate to explore leasing - not selling - the old Town Hall at 9546 Brandywine Road. The building will remain owned by Northfield Center Township.

The agreement allows Cresco to evaluate potential leasing opportunities that could help preserve the historic building, support needed repairs and updates, and keep the property active while reducing financial impact on taxpayers. No lease has been finalized at this time. The agreement simply allows for professional evaluation and discussion as options are considered.

Those interested in leasing opportunities may contact Cresco Real Estate at info@crescorealestate.com. Residents will be kept informed as the process moves forward.

Volunteers Needed – Palmer House Museum Clean-Up Day

The Historical Society will be hosting a volunteer clean-up at the Palmer House Museum on Monday, April 20, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Community members are invited to assist with light indoor projects, including window washing, sweeping stairways, dusting artifacts, and general organizing.

This is an excellent opportunity for students in need of service hours, as well as residents who would like to give back while helping care for an important piece of Northfield Center Township’s heritage.

Additional dates when staff will be available to open the museum for volunteers include:

  • March 14
  • March 28

Outdoor grounds clean-up will begin once the weather improves and the property has had time to dry. To sign up or arrange a time to help, contact Ellen Bertel at (216) 559-7285. It’s a meaningful, hands-on way to support and preserve the Township’s history.

Zoning Permits for Spring Projects

As spring weather approaches, we know many residents are getting ready to start outdoor projects like fences, pools, and decks. Before breaking ground, please remember that many of these improvements require a zoning permit.

Permit applications and the Township’s Zoning Code are available on the Zoning Portal page at northfieldcenter.com. Residents are encouraged to review these materials to ensure projects meet all Township requirements before getting started.

Payment for zoning permits can be made by cash or check and may be mailed or dropped off at the Northfield Center Township offices during regular business hours.

Taking a few minutes to secure the proper permit helps your project move forward smoothly and ensures everything is in compliance. If you have any questions, call 330-467-7646.

Recycling Resources for Electronics

ReWorks, the solid waste management authority serving Summit County, hosts special collection events throughout the year for items that can’t go in your regular home recycling cart. These Recycling Days are open to Summit County residents and businesses only and are designed to collect hard-to-recycle materials such as tires (prepayment required), electronics, glass bottles and jars, cooking oil, Styrofoam™, string lights, and campaign signs. Please note that household hazardous waste and any unlisted materials will not be accepted.

In addition, small electronics can be dropped off year-round in the Summit e-Waste bin located at the Old Town Hall, 9546 Brandywine Road. For larger electronics recycling (e-cycling) needs, please contact Summit e-Waste directly.

Take advantage of these opportunities to recycle responsibly and help keep our community clean and sustainable!

Town Center and Streetscape Planning

As part of our evaluation and engagement of a consultant group to help audit our Township planning needs, the Township is also considering potential enhancements to the Town Center area, including possible expansion, overlay district concepts, and long-term streetscape improvements along the Olde 8 / Route 82 corridor. Streetscape planning examines features such as sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, and public spaces to promote safety, walkability, and community character.

Resident input will be an important part of these discussions. A brief community survey is expected to be released in the coming months and will be posted on the Township website, with notices sent to all email subscribers. Residents are encouraged to stay engaged and participate as the process moves forward and if you have not already subscribed to our email please do so by subscribing at
