A Note From Principal Lewis

We are excited to announce the start of our Briarlake Elementary Rising Beavers After-School Program! It is a tutorial program facilitated by our very own BES teachers. The Rising Beavers Program begins March 7, 2017 and will continue until April 17, 2017.  Tutorial will be held every Monday and Tuesday.  Students will receive instruction in reading and/or math during this period.  Identified students in grades 3rd-5th are eligible to participate and should have received a permission slip in this Friday's folder to be signed.

Check out our Briarlake kindergartners on the Briarlake Forest website! They took a field trip there last week as part of Briarlake Elementary's growing relationship with the forest.
Deadline TOMORROW (MONDAY): Yearbook Cover Contest Extended to March 6!
Would your student like their design featured on this year's yearbook cover?
Here's their chance! The cover artwork must meet the following criteria:

* Be on an 11x17 piece of paper
* Be bright and colorful
* Include at least one hand-made smiley face emoji on the cover somewhere
* Include: Briarlake Elementary School
* Include: 2016-2017
* Include their name and grade on the back of the artwork

This Wednesday is Georgia Walk to School Day - March 8th, 7-7:40am 
Wednesday, March 8th from 7-7:40am is Georgia Walk to School Day!
Kids who walk or bike to school will receive stickers and cool prizes! If you live too far to walk from home, you can meet up with other families and form a Walking School Bus!

Walking School Buses leave from these locations at 7:10am

This event was originally scheduled for March 18th but has been postponed to avoid a conflict with the Science Olympiad event.  

Campus Beautification Goals: 

Plant roses in the front of the school

Finish coating the deck and rails by the cafeteria.

Field Day will be on Fri. 5/19/16 and our theme this year is CARNIVAL. T-shirt order forms will come home in children's " Friday
folders" & also see order form. T-shirt orders must be placed by Monday 3/27/16. Please return order form with payment to your child's teacher.
You can also place your order online at (note that online ordering will be available  Friday March 10 thru Monday March 27.

Please note that you DO NOT have to buy a field day shirt for your child to participate; children may wear a t-shirt with the color assigned to their grade as noted on the flyer.

Highlights of the Fine Arts Show
-        Art will be displayed in the hallways from the front entrance down to the art room
-        In the art room, there will be art projects for families and kids
-        There will be three dimensional artwork on display in the cafeteria
-        There will be a scavenger hunt to find different types and themes of art.
-        Other interactive stations will be around the school (e.g., fan mail, photo booth)

Registration for Camp Invention is open! And Ms. Thomas is looking for a Camp Parent. As an incentive, the Camp Parent will receive free enrollment for the first child and $130 off each additional sibling (can you say AWESOME deal?). We are still in need of several STEM Parents.
STEM Parents are very similar to Reader Parents.  
This is a job that can be done at home.

STEM Parent Description:

The STEM parents's job is one of coordination.  They communicate with the teacher to enlist parent volunteers and request supplies for STEM days.

Before each STEM day, the class STEM parent will ask the teacher if parent assistance and/or STEM materials are needed for that particular STEM day.  If so, the STEM parent will find out what kind of help/material is needed, and what times parents should attend.  The STEM parent will then email the class parents via Sign-Up Genius (or other volunteer sign up program) and request parent assistance and supplies.  The Volunteer Sign Up will include the materials requested and the times and the activities for which help is needed.

Henderson Middle School Foundation Annual Campaign, March 6 - 24 - please help your future school
Donate Today
Help your child's future school by making a donation to the HMS Foundation! The foundation's goal is to provide educational resources to the school, to enrich the school's academic and cultural offerings. Because of the foundation, HMS has been working towards becoming a STEM school -  and we are making progress toward that goal! This year, HMS has one STEM team in 7th and 8th grades, and they have been a great success. More teams will be added in the future.
But it's not just about STEM. You probably know that HMS is undergoing renovations and is getting a new wing. The money raised this year can also be used to help purchase equipment or supplies that might be needed for the new wing.
This means that donations made today will go to programs that directly impact your rising elementary student. Your participation will help ensure the HMS Foundation can continue supporting the school. Remember - a strong school makes for a strong neighborhood.
