An IEP meeting is a complex process that sometimes includes terms and acronyms which are challenging to understand. The process becomes even more complex when the IEP meeting is being interpreted into the primary language of the parents and guardians.
This workshop will include:
  • Discussion of the roles and responsibilities of an interpreter in an IEP meeting
  • General review of the IEP process and types of IEP meetings
  • Explanation of frequently used special education terms and acronyms

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework based on research in the learning sciences that guides the development of flexible learning environments. The idea is to accommodate individual learning differences by providing multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement. Learn how you can use this framework to support students who struggle with reading and writing without buying expensive apps. In this session, participants will learn the latest iPad tips, tricks, and tools to support struggling students and enhance instructional practices.

CEUs for SLPs

This informative session covers the basics: the what, where, when, and how of IEPs and the SEIS IEP Program. We will explain best practices and requirements for timelines, IEPs, and ITPs. We will go over how to use the SEIS IEP Program for IEPs, DRDPs, go over the forms available in the program, goal libraries, and how to access student information for your caseload. Time will be allotted for participants to practice using the computerized IEP program with one of their current IEPs.

Pre-requisite for NBITS

In this course, participants will learn the basic terminology and principles of applied behavior analysis. Attendees will learn about types of consequences, collect basic behavioral data, and determining the function of behavior. This presentation emphasizes the need for positive behavior supports and environmental strategies to avoid potential problem behaviors.

Learn strategies and ideas to create communication opportunities using AAC during the course of every-day classroom and home activities. Utilize a variety of AAC systems and conversational targets to enhance vocabulary for the AAC user utilizing the principles of Aided Language Stimulation, Descriptive Teaching Models, and Social Scripting to increase expressive output in children who are using AAC.

Puberty can be a chaotic and confusing time for children, including students with disabilities. In this workshop, participants will learn the difference between puberty and adolescence. We will focus on identifying potential opportunities to teach specific behaviors as they relate to puberty and how to manage challenging behaviors that might arise during this time. The workshop will also detail various strategies for taking a proactive approach to teaching children about both the physical and social-emotional changes that can occur. Lastly, we will discuss how parents, schools, and the community can work together to support those with special needs during this time of change.

Pre-requisite "Behavior Basics" required if taking the NCCSE Behavior Intervention Series (NBITS). This is the first of a 3-part sequence of the NCCSE Behavior Intervention Training Series. 
In this course, participants will learn about the responsibilities of NBITS-Certified staff as well as IDEA mandates and legal updates regarding behavior supports. Presenters will provide information regarding a hierarchy of behavioral supports and how to document behavior interventions and strategies within student IEPs. Participants will learn how to conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and complete an FBA summary report.

Participants will be required to follow SD County and SDCOE guidelines for the prevention of transmission of the COVID-19, This includes wearing face masks, even if vaccinated, when inside the building. Assigned seating will be implemented for all registered participants. No walk-ins. In-person events are subject to cancellation, modification, or change to an online-only format.

PD credit for BCBAs

Pre-requisite "Behavior Basics" required if taking the NCCSE Behavior Intervention Series (NBITS). This is the second of a 3-part sequence—the NCCSE Behavior Intervention Training Series. In this course, participants will learn about how to develop a functionally-based Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). Additionally, participants will learn about the development of a collaborative Pathway Charting to aid in the development of behavior interventions. A significant focus of the workshop will be dedicated to the development of empirically supported interventions and documenting such interventions in Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) utilizing the NCCSE-approved PENT-developed forms.

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention
Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI): Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training is perfect for educators who directly intervene in crisis situations, teaching staff de-escalation techniques as well as restrictive and nonrestrictive interventions. Participants learn decision-making skills to match the level of the response to the risk of the crisis, focusing on the least-restrictive response to ensure the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security SM of those in their care. This includes recognizing the stages of an escalating crisis and learning evidence-based techniques to appropriately de-escalate. NCI training emphasizes physical intervention as a last resort and appropriate to the level of risk.

Initial 2-day In-Person Training
Location: North County Regional Education Center (subject to change).
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Refresher In-person Training
The Refresher Training is for individuals who are currently certified in CPI’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, whose certification has not expired, and are required to receive the biannual refresher training in order to maintain their certification. The grace period for expired certifications is of 60 days.

Nominations must be received by March 15, 2022

The Awards will be presented at the NCCSE CAC Awards Ceremony on May 25, 2022 (location TBA) and all nominees will be independently notified about their nomination.

The scholarship submission period for new applications for 2022-2023 is open until March 31, 2022.
  1. The Dr. Lynnette Robinson Scholarship for Inclusive Education - For high school seniors who want to pursue a career in special education or a related field.
  2. The Bob Grundstrom Memorial Scholarship Information - For high school seniors who receive special education services.
