Spring Yards Can Hide Unexpected Hazards.

MSA recently received a safety share involving a service truck entered a service bay when a large rock (approximately 3.5” in diameter) dislodged from between the tires and was propelled across the shop. The rock struck a trailer in an adjacent bay, causing significant damage, before rebounding back. At the time, an employee was working in that adjacent bay. Investigation revealed a slight difference in timing could have resulted in a serious injury.

Lessons Learned:

  • The company has implemented ongoing inspections of the yard to remove large rocks until the final top layer is applied, leveled, and compacted.
  • Maintain clean driving surfaces throughout yard work and remove debris continuously as work progresses.
  • Include tire and wheel area inspections as part of circle checks for all trucks and trailers.
  • Communicate changing yard conditions to workers whenever maintenance or ground work activities are underway.

MSA Resources Available to Support Members:

  • Access to training to reinforce hazard awareness and safe work practices
  • Use Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) tools to assess risks during changing yard conditions
  • Contact MSA Safety Consultants for support developing effective inspection checklists and safe work procedures

Taking a few extra minutes in the spring to clean up debris and check tires could help prevent serious incidents. A little attention now could help keep your team safe and operations running smoothly.
