Vanessa Johnson Begins Two Year Residency!

Thanks to funds available through the Creatives ReBuild NY Initiative, our very own artist in residence, Vanessa Johnson, will be paid a full salary and benefits for two years to support her work in partnership with the Gage Foundation! Vanessa will continue to engage audiences through community performances and interactive exhibits. This will expand access to the resources and message of the Gage Center to our wider community! As an organizational partner, the Gage Foundation will be awarded a total $60,000 to help with operations and support Vanessa’s work.

“Creatives Rebuild New York (CRNY), a project of the Tides Center, is a three-year, $125 million investment in the financial stability of New York State artists and the organizations that employ them. This opportunity was made possible through support from CRNY’s Artist Employment Program.”

Look out for an invite to visit Vanessa's studio at the Gage Center!

The Gage Home SPARKLES!

Thanks to a recent grant from the Ludwick Family Foundation, the Center's exterior was refreshed by Savinelli Painting, and our siding and front stairs were repaired by Tom Perry.

Once again, we have lovely flower boxes provided by the Brockway Farms Garden Club and mulching & weeding by William Sunderlin (join William as a volunteer by giving us a shout!). Tyler Baker of Manlius TJB Landscapes maintains our lawn, and we just started monthly cleaning with Home Sweet Home (a woman-owned small business). Many thanks to the generous gifts for keeping the Center in tip-top shape.

OUT & ABOUT

Sally and Heather attended the Ms. Foundation annual Women of Vision Awards 2022 on May 17 in NYC, guests of our wonderful supporter Ginny Corsi! It was a great evening visiting with Gloria Steinem and Teresa Younger of Ms., Ginny, Mary Backlund, Susan Pelosi, and others, including New York Times Department of Justice Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Katie Benner and League of Women Voters of the US CEO Virginia Kase Solomón. The networking resulted in Sally presenting an hour-long webinar for the National League of Women Voters on the Haudenosaunee influence on the suffrage movement!

Carey Graeber, the producer of the welcome film shown in the Gage Center, held an informal reception on May 18 with Mirielle Miller, June Glaser, Sally, Deirdre Carney, and Joan Monk.

Happy 80th to Sally and Happy 22nd, MJG Foundation!

"This is 1976. I was on a research trip when I was working on my doctoral dissertation on Gage at UC Santa Cruz. Remember thinking this house is so important it shouldn't be someone's residence like it is; it should be open to the public. Never dreamed I'd make it happen." -Sally 8/4/22

Thank you for celebrating with us, near and far! Here's the wonderful tribute video:  https://www.tribute.co/sally-and-matilda/

HISTORY, STORIES & ART! GAGE CAMP 2022 IN THE BOOKS!

Camp Director Vanessa Johnson created two special weeks in July: "Girls Change The World" focused on social justice issues and youth activism (ages 7-12) and "Talking Freedom!" on the history of the Underground Railroad in Central NY (ages 10-15).

And our "Talking Freedom!" campers helped to host Brady Faith Center for a day. It was a great opportunity to share and experience the Gage Center together.

REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE RALLY AT GAGE CENTER ORGANIZED BY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

On June 24, the Supreme Court of the United States handed down a watershed decision in the Case of Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This was a devastating blow to reproductive rights for women in America, turning abortion regulation over the states and removing any federal protections, which were established by precedent and protected for the last half century.

That day, we received a message from Fayetteville-Manlius High School senior, Maddy Malgieri, saying that members of the GirlUp Chapter were looking to hold a rally in response. "I had recalled seeing other protests held at the front of the MJG house and am writing to inquire whether it would be possible to host this event there," Maddy wrote.

With an enthusiastic YES we invited the youth leaders to hold a reproductive justice rally outside of the Gage Center, where they were joined by 75 people of all ages.

This just happened to be the same day that Gage’s descendants were visiting the Center. Gage’s descendant, Greg Morena, explained to the crowd how Gage’s concern for a woman’s right to choose carried on through him.

Thank you, Courtney and Melissa!

We have been lucky to host two accomplished interns this summer, undergraduate student Courtney Burgun of SUNY-Cortland and graduate student Dr. Melissa Smith of the Syracuse University iSchool. Courtney organized our files and workspace, researched historic materials, and stepped in wherever needed, from tours to gift shop sales. Melissa created collection data systems while cataloging our collection. Thank you both for your invaluable service.

COME AND VISIT!

We are refreshing our exhibits, and we need your input! Please bring your friends or family to the Center and lead them in a self-guided tour. Throughout the tour and before you leave, record any of your comments, or suggestions for change and leave them for Sally. Your thoughts will be instrumental in the changes. Thank you!

Team Updates

We offer appreciation to Melissa Almeyda for her three years of service at the foundation! As Deputy Director, Melissa navigated gracefully through an unusual era for our museum and foundation activities brought on by the global COVID Pandemic. We wish her well on her next journey!

Please join us in welcoming Tina Lauria as our Operations Manager. Tina’s experience in operations and office management includes a long tenure at the Everson Museum. Pictured: Melissa on National Historic Marker Day 2022.

WE PASSED A MILESTONE!

As you know, Matilda Joslyn Gage was written out of the mainstream history of the Early Women’s Rights movement by her contemporaries and, as a result, has long been missing from mainstream storytelling and research about the movement and its main figures. This is about to change!

In his address at the 2022 Convention for the Organization of American Historians, 2021-2022, President Philip J. Deloria mentioned Gage as part of his remarks. While speaking about history viewed through an Indigenous lens, he referenced Gage’s adoption into the Wolf Clan of the Mohawk nation.

This sets a new standard; anyone writing suffrage history who doesn’t include Gage, and the movement’s Haudenosaunee influence, will be seen as neglecting an intersectional history. Discussing Gage’s life and work is officially a “must” for suffrage history scholars.
