L'art de Conserver
: Appert's signature on verso of title page. One folding plate. Appert, a confectioner, chef, and distiller, developed the first method of preserving food by enclosing it in airtight, sealed containers. (Pasteur later admitted his pasteurization process was largely derived from Appert's earlier methods.) Appert was rewarded with a prize of 12,000 francs by the French Directory (Napoléon) who needed to supply the growing armies with stable sustenance. [CAGLE 28, 36]. Some foxing to interior. Covers rubbed at corners, otherwise very good. Contemporary half-calf and decorated boards. Very good. Hardcover.

The Town of Perry, NY, established in 1814, was once a thriving mill community on the banks of the Silver Lake Outlet. Dr. G. R. Traver was the Mayor of the hamlet, the coroner, and a business man. Advertised in the pamphlet are various creations of the "Neuralgia King:" e.g. "Dr. Traver's Neuralgia King," " Thankful Coon's Indian Tooth Powder," "Dr. Traver's Cough Syrup," and "The Oil of Universal Relief." Rubber stamp on rear cover: Compliments of Holley & Fletcher, Sidney Center, N.Y. [BROWN 2144a] Toned and stained on cover, with some pin holes. Tan illustrated wraps, string bound. Good. Pamphlet.

An array of dishes with some surprises, such as a recipe for "Hot Tamales" from a contributor (Helen E. Pelletreau) who had traveled to Corpus Christi. Helen Pelletreau was the third president of the Pennsylvania College For Women, and the first woman to hold the office. Pelletreau was chosen as Acting President after the prior person to hold the office resigned, and while trustees searched for a replacement. The committee, citing her exceptional business insight, then elected Miss Pelletreau as President, a title she kept for 14 years until her retirement in 1894. Pages lightly toned. White oil cloth covered boards. Very good. Hardcover.

"Like Them? Sure You Will - Everybody Does! White River Junction, VT, c. 1920's. 46 x 16 inches. This colorful and animated canvas emulates the dreamlike quality of Maxfield Parrish. Sleepy White River Junction became a railroad boon town after
rail lines intersected at the junction of the Connecticut and White Rivers during
the transportation revolution. Smith & Son Inc. began their confection and cracker enterprise in Dartmouth, NH, and moved to White River Junction in 1871. By 1889, the company claimed that the factory annually produced almost 20 million crackers as well as 400 varieties of candies and chocolates. Canvas creased with light staining. Professionally sewn onto acid free mat board attached to foam core. Cream canvas, color silk screen with metal grommets at corners. Very good.
