There are a myriad of ways for the young and young-at-heart to engage with Kol Israel Foundation. Students may enter this year's Creative Arts Contest. Individuals whose school days are behind them can volunteer as a docent or speaker, help plan programs and fundraisers, or work toward maintaining and improving the Kol Israel Foundation Holocaust National Memorial. This installment of Kol Israel Kveller recaps recent accomplishments and previews upcoming attractions. We hope it will inspire you to help further our mission of Resilience, Remembrance, and Holocaust Education.

Monumental Achievement!
American, Ohio, and Israeli flags were raised on December 29, 2022, over the newly designated Kol Israel Foundation Holocaust NATIONAL Memorial at Zion Memorial Park. The site, which was dedicated in 1961 and has since been expanded to include surrounding memorial walls, becomes the first national memorial devoted to remembering Holocaust victims.
|
|
Andrew Mizsak, a KIF board member involved in garnering national recognition for the site, raises U.S. and Ohio flags over the newly designated Kol Israel Foundation Holocaust National Memorial.
|
|
KIF Executive Director Hallie Duchon watches KIF President Robert Zelwin raise the Israeli flag at the south end of the site. As a national memorial, the area is now afforded federal protection.
|
|
The flag-raising was attended by about three dozen supporters, including elected officials and community leaders. Following the ceremony, news reporters from several media outlets interviewed board members, a Survivor, and descendants of Survivors for stories that ran on multiple platforms.

Help Expand Reach of KIF's Face to Face®
|
|
Survivors Art Gelbart, left, and Rose Gelbart discuss their Holocaust experiences with students from Solon High School during a Face to Face field trip on March 2.
|
|
KIF's Face to Face program provides a meaningful, authentic Holocaust education experience for audiences ages 12 and up. Sessions focus on the history of the Holocaust, the experiences of those who endured Nazi atrocities, and how to leverage the lessons of the Holocaust to prevent future genocides.
Over the years, Face to Face has reached more than 58,000 students in Northeast Ohio and beyond by offering:
- Field trips to our Beachwood location
- In-person visits to their classroom
- Virtual presentations through platforms such as Zoom
We need your help to expand our reach even more. Here's how:
- If you teach a course in history, literature, art, religion, or Holocaust studies, we want to hear from you.
- If you work with or know educators who teach the above-mentioned classes, encourage them to contact us.
- Advocate for Face to Face at your child's or grandchild's school. We work with public, private, and parochial schools.
- Remember, our virtual option opens opportunities to schools anywhere in the nation, so talk up Face to Face wherever you go!
For more information or to schedule a Face to Face session, contact KIF Education Director Lindsay Friedman at [email protected] or 216.831.3754 ext. 103.

From the KIF Kitchen
Fix-It and Forget-It Chicken
The Seder meal may be the year's most time-consuming to get on the table. This entree feeds a crowd and takes only moments to prep, freeing up time to make the charoset, eggs, gefilte fish, soup, matzo balls, sponge cake ...
2 roasting chickens, cut into 8 pieces each
garlic powder to taste
large onion, peeled and sliced into thin rings
2 cups sweet wine
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place chicken in a large baking pan and sprinkle liberally with garlic powder. Lay onion slices over chicken. Pour wine over chicken and onions. Cover pan and bake for 60 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 30 minutes until onions are crispy and chicken skin is glazed.
