Arts & Crafts Class

  • All Levels

Join us as we make a variety of take home crafts and socialize with friends. Participants should be able to use craft supplies with minimal supervision (glue, scissors, etc.). Participants requiring more supervision are welcome to come with an aide.
Self Directed Adult Group

Are you looking for ways to engage in social, community and volunteer experiences but not sure where to begin?

Join us in creating a group that will have oversight at first, with the intent of becoming an independent group interested in these self-directed goals.

The first Wednesday of the month will be held at C'Ville Coffee from 4:30-6pm to discuss group goals, objectives and outings. The third Wednesday of each month will be spent in the community volunteering or engaging in events. Please note, times may vary based on opportunities of interest.

Lunch & Baby Goat Snuggling

Join us for an afternoon at Caromont Farms snuggling baby goats! First we will have lunch at a local restaurant and then head to the farm to explore and interact with the animals. Please bring $25 for lunch and any items you may want to purchase at the farm.
Spring Break Camp

Enjoy Spring Break with friends as we travel to different locations around the area and participate in a variety of activities. The group will meet at Crow Recreation Center, and then spend the entire day on a field trip. Trip details will be available closer to the program and are subject to change due to weather. Participants needing one on one assistance should come with an aide.

Join us for a workout and variety of strength and cardio exercises! Participants should come dressed in workout clothes and sneakers and bring a water bottle. Classes run until May 2018.

  Free Adaptive Basketball

  • All Levels
  • Wednesdays
  • Ages 13 & up
  • 12:30-1:30pm
  • Carver Center
  • FREE

Practice basketball and learn skills with friends. Geared towards teens and adults who are independent and respond safely in large group supervision. Staff ratio is 1:15. If individual attention is required, please come with an aide. Program runs until May 2018.

Water Exercise
No Class March 22

Group instruction for individuals with disabilities in water exercise. Must be able to care for self in dressing room and respond to supervision in 1:8 ratio or come with an aide. Aides are expected to join the group in the water to assist, so please come prepared. $1 at the door .

Registration for a League of Our Own is Open!

A League of Our Own is a therapeutic softball program for teens and adults with disabilities that give everyone a chance to play and enjoy the sport of softball. The program was developed by volunteer Janie Norris and City of Charlottesville Adaptive Recreation Program. The program is supervised entirely by volunteers, led by Janie Norris.

Participants need to be independent, respond safely in a large group, and willing and able to participate both in the batting and in the outfield. If individual attention is needed participant needs to come with a family member or counselor who will help assist the individual at all times.

Lillie Williams, with drummer Darrel Rose, will tell stories of Anansi and the Sky Kingdom and Anansi Gives Wisdom to the World by Patricia C. McKissack. This story will include dancing, drumming, singing, and lots of audience participation. 14 years old and younger.

Writing Your Way Through Life
In 2009, Jim Herndon published Jack's Shop: Beyond the Front Porch and in 2013, he published Jack's Shop: The Long Road Back. The books are memoirs and inspirational works that provide readers an interesting look at his life growing up in a rural Virginia county.

Adaptive Recreation implements participant levels to our activities based on our experience and research into what a participant can expect physically and sensory wise during the activity. 
This is to inform participants of what a trip may involve and to encourage them to register for programs that will be the most enjoyable and successful based on their needs.  

LEVEL I 
Mobility: No assistance and can manage most surfaces and terrains to include steep inclines and uneven surfaces. Should be able to walk up to 30 minutes without resting.
Personal Care: Can maintain their own personal hygiene without assistance or with verbal cues
Cognitive: Can follow single step instructions without assistance and stay within a group setting. 
Communication: Able to convey feelings, desires and needs.

   LEVEL 2  
Mobility: Some assistance or self-propelled device. Needs assistance on uneven terrain and independent on flat surfaces.
Personal Care: Can maintain their own personal hygiene with verbal assistance.
Cognitive : Can follow instructions with verbal prompts, constant reminders and some assistance.
Communication: Able to convey feelings, desires and needs with picture cues or ASL.

LEVEL 3
Mobility: Full assistance and/or self propelled device. Must come with an aide
Personal Care: Personal hygiene with full assistance.
Cognitive: Limited ability to follow instruction.
Communication: Able to convey feelings, desires and needs with full assistance.
