First Tee Life Skills

Setting Goals: Process & Purpose

At First Tee, pursuing goals is essential to being a Game Changer. Goals help you work towards your dreams, both on and off the course. Whether you're setting short-term or long-term goals, there's much to be learned from goal setting itself. In this lesson, we focus on the process of setting goals.

To set goals, think about what you want to accomplish and what it will take to reach that goal. For example, if you aim for Honor Roll with all A's and B's, what would that require? Doing well on tests and assignments. How would you achieve this? Take good notes, turn in work on time, and study for tests.

The Four Guidelines for Setting a Reachable Goal:

  1. The goal is Positive (I want to achieve a passing score of 80% or higher vs. I don’t want to fail this test.)
  2. The goal is Important to You (It should be important to you, not someone else. Explain why you want it and its significance.)
  3. The goal is Specific (Know exactly what you're working toward.)
  4. The goal is Under Your Control (Your efforts will achieve this goal vs. something out of your control like fame or winning the lottery.)

Goal setting is a strategy you will apply for life. As you explore these Four Guidelines, you'll learn and grow from setting and working toward your goals.

First Tee Fundamentals

Pre-Shot Routine

The First Tee fundamental for "Pre-Shot Routine" emphasizes the critical importance of preparation before hitting a golf shot. This routine involves a series of deliberate steps that golfers follow to ensure consistency, focus, and optimal performance.

Key components of the Pre-Shot Routine include:

  • Visualizing: Imagine the trajectory and landing spot of the ball.
  • Club Selection: Choosing the club that best suits the shot.
  • Practice Swings: getting a feel for the motion.
  • Aligningment: Ensuring proper alignment with the target.
  • Calming the Mind: Eliminating distractions and reducing anxiety.

By consistently following a structured pre-shot routine, golfers can:

  • Build confidence and maintain a positive mindset.
  • Enhance overall performance on the course.
  • Create a sense of familiarity and comfort.
  • Focus on executing each shot to the best of their ability.
  • Develop mental resilience and discipline.

This process is beneficial for improving technical skills and fostering personal growth, both in golf and in other aspects of life.
