MARCH 2024

Education Foundation of Odessa E-News

Spring Into Reading!

The Education Foundation Bookworms Committee is partnering with our friends at Chevron to bring the Bookworms Literacy Festival to the children in Ector County on April 27th at Lawndale Park in North Odessa! We know that there are many events around town to promote literacy but one more never hurts, right? Like our friend Dolly Parton says, "You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children."

There are many opportunities for you to get involved in this festival - either as a volunteer or a partnering organization. If you'd like to get more involved in our ongoing literacy efforts, call Celeste or Dawn at 432.456.7059.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Ector County

To Walk in Their Shoes: OCTECHS Student Symposium

To Walk in their Shoes is the title for OCTECHS recent student symposium on war, genocide and human rights. The February 2 event culminated months of research with project presentations and two guest speakers.

Since 2018, OCTECHS English teacher Shelley Wagner has received a grant to take her juniors to the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum in Dallas, and afterward had them produce a reflective project. Mrs. Wagner arranged the symposium this year as a way for the public to learn about the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum through the students’ eyes.

T.A.P. Into Learning

The Education Foundation Grants Committee is introducing a new program in 2024 called the Teacher Assistance Program (T.A.P.) that is intended to provide time-sensitive assistance to ECISD teachers on a monthly basis for items and/or projects that directly impact student learning. Eligible T.A.P. requests must cost $1,000 or less, directly impact student learning, and comply with district policies.

The Grants Committee was excited to award two T.A.P. requests in February totaling $1,209.10!

Sonny Alaniz from Odessa High School received $1,000 to provide students with a safe and structured environment to operate their robots to full capacity in the classroom without damaging the floors.

Eliseo Gomez received $209.10 to cover transportation costs, water and snacks that will allow 4th grade GT students from Blackshear, Milam, Cameron and Dowling to visit the West Texas Food Bank to learn more about hunger and food insecurities in our community.
