Vol. 13

April 2026

President's Corner

Good morning, Seven Pearls Family!

April is a time of renewal and transitions as we make way for new beginnings in our lives. Life blossoms as flowers bloom, trees bud waking up from winter and the weather warms nature from its slumber.

April is the time of regional conferences where we renew our commitment to Sigma Service, elect new officers and make the necessary changes as we progress in the organization. Change can be difficult but often it is necessary to keep up with the demand of time and trends. So, we adapt, push forward and continue our capacity to do great deeds in our communities, impacting and empowering those around us with our programming.

As we embark on these new beginnings, let us remember our traditions, teaching those who look to us that even through things around us may change, it is imperative we keep our Founders' mission as the foundation of all that we do as an organization.

Always for the Seven,

Linette Y. Caroselli

President/CEO of Seven Pearls Foundation, Inc.

Crowning Efforts with Success Award

Soror Jacqueline Thomas is the Seven Pearls Foundation's Crowning Efforts with Success Award recipient for April 2026!

Thomas stands as a beacon of hope and dedication in the realm of maternal health, embodying the very essence of commitment to the well-being of Black, Indigenous, rural, and Tribal communities throughout New Mexico. As the passionate Founder & CEO of Vet-HER-an Enterprises, LLC, she has undertaken transformative initiatives that address critical gaps in care access, demonstrating her profound understanding of the unique challenges these communities face. From the establishment of a statewide Maternal Health Week that celebrates and raises awareness, to fostering essential partnerships that bring Black healthcare providers into New Mexico, her work is a testament to the power of collaboration and advocacy. Additionally, her innovative design of mobile maternal health units ensures that even the most underserved areas receive the care they desperately need, reaching those often overlooked by mainstream systems. Through her unwavering dedication, Thomas not only uplifts the voices of marginalized women but also aligns beautifully with the Seven Pearls Foundation’s mission of empowering women and girls of color through community-driven efforts. Together, we can support initiatives like Thomas's, reinforcing our shared commitment to health equity and transforming lives within our communities.

In rural New Mexico, she tirelessly advocates for mothers who lack essential prenatal and postpartum resources, creating programs that not only save lives but also bridge critical cultural gaps in healthcare. Her commitment to uplifting Black maternal health in a state where this demographic comprises less than 3% of the population—yet faces disproportionate challenges—is nothing short of inspiring. By leading trauma-informed, culturally grounded, and spiritually aligned initiatives, Thomas honors our lineage while safeguarding the futures of generations to come. It is essential that her work receives the recognition it deserves, not for personal gain, but to amplify visibility that can unlock vital funding, foster partnerships, and drive the statewide changes that our communities so desperately need. Soror Thomas understands that if we fail to elevate the voices of those bravely fighting on the frontlines, our mothers and babies risk continuing to suffer in silence. Her mission is undeniably critical, rooted in purpose, measurable action, and a profound commitment to serving others before self.

Honoring this work will uplift the countless women, families, and communities who stand to benefit from the expansion of maternal health equity across New Mexico and beyond.

It is our esteemed honor to present Soror Jacqueline Thomas as this month's recipient of the Crowning Efforts with Success Award.

Join us in giving this amazing lady her flowers!

National Stress Month

A Short Guide to Understanding Stress

Racquel H. Dozier

National Stress Awareness Month is observed every April since 1992 to increase public awareness about the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic. It highlights the severe physical and mental health impacts of chronic stress, promoting education, stress management techniques, and healthy coping strategies to improve overall well-being. (https://www.stress.org/)

Understanding Stress

We often talk about stress as a background noise in our lives. It is the frantic energy of a Monday morning, the weight of a long to-do list, or the tightness in our shoulders after a long day. For many women, stress is not just an occasional visitor, it is a constant companion. However, understanding wheat stress is and how it affects the female body is the first step toward reclaiming a sense of balance.

What is Stress?

At its core, stress is a physical response. When your brain perceives a challenge or a threat, it signals your body to release a surge of hormones, including cortisol and adrenaline. This “fight or flight” mechanism is designed to protect us from physical danger.

In today’s world, the threat is rarely a physical predator. Instead, it is often a demanding career, caregiving responsibilities, or the mental load of managing a household. For women, these stressors can be compounded by hormonal fluctuations throughout different life stages, which can make the body mor sensitive to the physical effects of tension.

The Impact on the Body

When stress becomes chronic, it stops being the helpful motivator and begins to ear on our health. Women may experience specific symptoms such as:

·        Disrupted sleep: Difficulty falling asleep or waking up at 3am with a racing mind.

·        Digestive issues: Changes in appetite or nervous stomach pains.

·        Emotional Shifts: Feeling more irritable, anxious, or overwhelmed than usual.

·        Physical Tension: Frequent headaches or jaw clenching.

Common Sources of Stress for Women

Understanding where the pressure comes from can help us address it at the root. While every life is unique, many women navigate a specific set of stressors:

·        The Mental Load: This is the invisible labor of managing a household. It is the running list in your head of grocery needs, school schedules, and social obligations that never seems to stop.

·        Caregiving Demands: Many women find themselves in the generation of sandwiching it all together. Simultaneously, women are caring for children or aging parents while also trying to maintain their own well-being.

·        Work-Life Integration: The pressure to perform at a high level professionally while feeling the need to be fully present at home can create a constant sense of guilt or inadequacy.

·        Health and Body Changes: Navigating reproductive health, hormonal shift, or chronic illness journeys adds a layer of physical and emotional strain that can be challenging as well.

Practical Coping Strategies

Managing stress is not about removing every obstacle from your life. It is about building a toolkit that helps you navigate those obstacles without losing your peace. Here are several practical ways to lower your stress levels today.

1.     Practice Intentional Breathing – When we are stressed, our breathing becomes shallow. Taking just three minutes to focus on deep, rhythmic breaths can send a signal to your nervous system that you are safe. Try inhaling for a count of four, holding for four, and exhaling for six. This simple act can physically lower your heart rate and relieve stress.

2.  The Power of NO – Many women feel a pressure to be everything to everyone. Learning to set boundaries is a vital health practice. If a request does not align with your current capacity, it is okay to decline. Protecting your time is a form of self-care that prevents burnout before it starts.

3.     Prioritize movement -Exercise is one of the most effective ways to process stress hormones. You do not need to spend hours at the gym to see the benefits. A twenty-minute walk in the fresh air or a brief session of gentle stretching can clear the mental fog and improve your mood.

3.     Connect and Share – We are social creatures. Sometimes, the simple act of naming your stress to a trusted friend or a support group can reduce its power. Connection reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles.

Human Approach to Wellness

Remember that you are a person, not a machine. There will be days when the house is messy, the emails are unanswered, and you feel tired. That is okay. Being healthy includes being kind to yourself when things are difficult.

I challenge you to start small. Choose one tip from the list above and try it this week. By making small intentional changes, you can shift the narrative from just surviving in stress day to day to truly connecting with yourself and tapping into your potential to limit stress and thrive.

New Year, New Leadership

What to Look for in a Sigma Candidate

As we embark on the vital journey of electing new leadership both within our regions and on an international scale, it is essential to take an honest and thoughtful look at the qualities we seek in our leaders. We must prioritize the election of individuals who genuinely respect our voices, possess a clear and actionable direction for our sorority, and demonstrate the skill set and courage needed to guide us forward. Leadership is a challenging endeavor that demands integrity, honesty, trustworthiness, strong character, open-mindedness, and competence. At the heart of effective leadership lies a compelling vision—one that is not only realistic but also accompanied by a strategic plan for implementation. This vision represents a vivid and inspiring picture of the future that our leaders aspire to create for our organization, encapsulating their goals, values, and aspirations. A well-articulated leadership vision not only inspires and motivates but also provides a clear sense of direction and purpose for all involved. Let us reflect on the qualities we desire in our future leaders and actively engage in the upcoming leadership elections, for it is through our collective voices and choices that we can drive transformative change within our communities and uphold the Founders' commitment to empowerment and social mobility.

Leadership is a journey that thrives on vision and the courage to rise above mediocrity. Leaders must be dynamic and open to learning, embracing new experiences that pave the way for growth. Central to this vision is the practice of active listening—an essential tool that not only helps in achieving our organizational goals but also fosters a culture of trust and collaboration among our members. While the feedback we receive may sometimes be challenging, it is a vital component of our progress and transformation. Responding with care and respect, even in moments of disagreement, is crucial for cultivating an inclusive environment where every voice is valued. This commitment to respectful communication enhances internal motivation, sparks creativity, and deepens engagement within our community. By prioritizing attentive listening, we create pathways for honest dialogue, which is fundamental for our organizational health and empowers us to make informed strategic choices.

It is essential to seek out leaders who genuinely prioritize the well-being and interests of the sorority over personal ambitions. When leaders embody this selfless commitment, they foster an environment of trust, collaboration, and empowerment, enabling all members to flourish together. At the heart of effective leadership lies a deep understanding that true success is measured by the collective progress of the organization. By championing those who lead with compassion and a focus on shared goals, we create a strong foundation for transformative change and a brighter future for all.

During this crucial task of evaluating leadership candidates, it is imperative that we engage in an honest and comprehensive assessment of the candidates' experiences and the unique qualities they bring to our attention. Key considerations should include the teams they have previously led, their proven track record, and the clarity of their vision—especially as it pertains to the sorority matters that resonate with our values. We must delve into the qualifications and experiences that position them as viable candidates for the roles they seek, examining any endorsements they may have and ensuring that their leadership is supported by credible sources. It is encouraged that you reach out to various chapters and regions to gather insights from members regarding their leadership credentials, focusing on concrete facts supported by substantial evidence rather than hearsay. Let us commit to moving beyond the allure of friendship or superficial traits, such as appearance, and instead prioritize candidates who demonstrate genuine capability and a commitment to uplift our sisterhood. Together, we can make informed decisions that empower our mission and inspire transformative change within our sisterhood.

Education Today: Analyzing the Marzano Model of Evaluation for Teachers

The Marzano Framework is a comprehensive instructional framework designed to enhance teaching effectiveness and improve student learning outcomes. This assessment measures effectiveness with the observance of classroom strategies and behaviors, classroom management and student needs, teacher self-reflection and teacher collegiality and professional behavior. While it is a researched based framework, many educators question its true effectiveness and its equity in the field.

Veteran teachers do not struggle with evaluation feedback due to a lack of willingness to grow; rather, the systemic approach to evaluations fails to acknowledge the distinct experiences and professional development of educators at different stages in their careers. It is fundamentally unreasonable to apply the same evaluative standards to a novice teacher, who is still laying the groundwork for their teaching practice, as to a seasoned educator with two decades of experience. While newer teachers often benefit from structured guidance, modeling, and direct feedback as they navigate their early years, veteran teachers require a different kind of support—one that involves collaborative thinking, thoughtful challenges, and an understanding of their advanced skill set. Unfortunately, the current evaluation system does not accommodate these varying needs, imposing uniform rubrics and checklists on all educators regardless of their level of expertise. This is not merely a problem of individual educators; it is a significant design flaw within the evaluation process itself that must be addressed to foster a more supportive and effective framework for professional growth.

The ongoing challenges associated with large-scale teacher evaluation reforms have not yielded the desired improvements in student achievement, as evidenced by research indicating that only about one in four teachers find the feedback they receive to be beneficial in enhancing their teaching practices. This reality underscores the need for a transformative approach to teacher development. In stark contrast, a comprehensive meta-analysis of instructional coaching reveals substantial gains in both teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes. The key distinction lies in the nature of coaching, which is characterized by its ongoing, specific, and contextually relevant support, effectively meeting educators where they are in their professional journey rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all evaluation system. This highlights a critical insight: while standardizing evaluation processes may seem advantageous, true growth cannot be standardized. The focus should shift from merely refining feedback mechanisms to ensuring that they are tailored to individual needs, thereby fostering an environment conducive to meaningful development and ultimately enhancing educational outcomes.

By adopting a more aspirational and conversational approach, we can foster an environment that encourages open dialogue. Rather than commencing with directives such as, “Here’s what you need to fix,” we can initiate conversations with questions like, “What are you currently working on?” “What strategies have proven effective for you?” and “In which areas do you aspire to improve?” This pivotal shift in perspective can transform the evaluation process, as growth is inherently a voluntary pursuit. By fostering this supportive and empowering atmosphere, we can inspire educators to embrace their potential and chart a path towards continuous growth and excellence.

Research consistently shows that teachers are more inclined to act on feedback when they feel that the individual providing it genuinely understands their unique challenges, content, and student dynamics. This connection is crucial; it shifts the focus from authority to the actual utility of the feedback. This is why effective coaching is not a mere one-off event but rather a continuous, tailored process rooted in real classroom practices such as the goal is for the Seven Pearls Foundation's In Front of the Class Teaching Fellows initiative. Such an approach fosters a sense of ownership among educators rather than mere compliance, marking a significant distinction in professional growth. Veteran teachers, with their extensive experience, often filter out feedback that does not resonate with their current operational level, and they are more likely to disregard input that feels generic or disconnected from their practical realities. To truly support teachers in their growth journey, the emphasis should not be on uniform evaluation methods but rather on providing personalized support that aligns with their individual developmental needs. Growth is inherently diverse; recognizing this and moving away from a one-size-fits-all mentality is essential to fostering meaningful progress within our educational communities.

ICHQ Evaluation Considerations

To ensure that our evaluation process for the future location of the International Headquarters is thorough and effective, it is essential that we incorporate comprehensive historical, legal, and financial information. This approach will empower sorority members to make fully informed decisions that resonate with the Seven Pearls Foundation's commitment to transparency and accountability. Our evaluation of the Cary property highlights several measurable considerations that align with both the sorority's and Foundation's missions. Should you like to acquire the original evaluation communique or have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the President/CEO at president@sevenpearls.org for further assistance. We encourage open dialogue and look forward to supporting you in understanding this important decision.

The field of education is currently confronted with a range of pressing issues that require immediate and thoughtful engagement. Key among these concerns is the rising integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in educational settings, the critical challenges of teacher retention and shortages, the potential dismantling of the Department of Education, the increasing focus on soft skills, and the movement towards personalized learning facilitated by data and technology. However, a significant and ongoing challenge remains: the exclusion of educators from pivotal discussions that shape educational policy and practice. It is imperative that educators' voices are not only heard but actively shape the future of education, as their insights and experiences are essential for addressing these multifaceted challenges. Without their participation, efforts to reform and enhance our educational systems are likely to be inadequate and ineffective. Therefore, fostering an inclusive dialogue that values and incorporates the perspectives of teachers is crucial for the sustainable advancement of education.

This month we invite you to hear from President/CEO Linette Caroselli as she and Dr. Unae Dozier have an in-depth conversation about her journey as an educator, the state of education today and the importance of balancing life as a teacher and leader of the Foundation.
