FEATURED FROM GPB EDUCATION
Fill your summer days with creativity, exploration and fun! Welcome to CAMP GPB, a series for kids that blends day camp and learning into playful fun. With the help of educators from our favorite partner organizations, as well as our own GPB "camp counselors," we are leading kids in engaging, hands-on activities.
News Flash! Georgia Studies educators can look forward to an enhanced version of GPB’s free digital textbook and virtual field trips for the coming school year. Launching this summer, these upgraded resources will allow teachers to link students directly to specific pages and elements, favorite content, interface with annotation and accessibility extensions, share to Google Classroom, and more! To give teachers a preview of the new design, we are releasing reworked virtual field trips periodically throughout the spring and summer. Check out the first three, now ready for your visit: National POW Museum, University of Georgia, and Warm Springs.
GRADES 6-12
Primary source materials provide a first-hand account of history. We can use them to draw conclusions about people, issues, and events from the past. While the subjects and primary source materials themselves may belong to a different time and place, they invariably allow us to draw connections to the present day. In this lesson, students will learn to critically examine primary source news footage. Specifically, they will observe, interpret, and ask questions of historical evidence.
GRADES K-5
A visit to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta proves to us, and hopefully to our audience, that a simple interest in math and technology can lead to a wide variety of career opportunities. Although we take a fun and loose approach to learning about the Federal Reserve, our Teachable Moments are truly insightful. They describe what this institution is and does and discuss the gold standard and exactly what gives money its value.
GRADES 9-12
In this lesson, students will use selected videos from the PBS series The Human Spark to investigate the differences and similarities between the respective social dynamics of humans and our closest primate relatives and what they may tell us about what—if anything—may make us uniquely human.
GRADES 3-8
In this interactive lesson supporting literacy skills in U.S. history, students learn about the three branches of the United States government. Students explore the powers that the Constitution assigns to each branch—legislative, executive, and judicial—and how the three branches work together. During this process, they read informational text, learn and practice vocabulary words, and explore content through videos and engagement activities.
GRADES 3-8
In this lesson, students discuss the meaning of gratitude and write their personal expressions of gratitude. By feeling and expressing gratitude, students can better appreciate the kindness of others and the importance of their relationships with family, friends, and teachers. Expressing gratitude also helps create a more caring and cohesive school community and allows students to focus on what they have, instead of on the deficits in their lives.
GRADES K-2
In this lesson, students learn about butterflies—the beautiful symmetrical patterns in their wings, how they search for food and eat, and how their wings help them survive in the wild. Using a live-action video short for inspiration, children use everyday craft materials to create colorful paper butterflies to brighten up the classroom. Then they make seed balls and discuss places to toss them in order to create mini gardens that both butterflies and people can enjoy.
