MONTHLY VILLAGE BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Fire Department: The 1st Assistant Chief requested the installation of "no parking" signs on 4th Avenue and noted several significant potholes, specifically at Center Street and 1st Street, which affect ambulance transport. The Fire Department is working on an e-grant system through the County, with roughly $20 million in available funds for infrastructure and equipment.

Mitchell Park Storyboards: The Stirling Historical Society proposed installing ten educational storyboards in Mitchell Park to detail Greenport’s history. The project, funded by the Friends of Mitchell Park for approximately $40,000, requires further information before a formal board vote.

Business Improvement District: BID President presented several ideas for using their surplus funds, including garbage cans, surveillance cameras, commercial real estate agency help to fill vacant storefronts, hiring a downtown clean up person, and permanent downtown tree lighting.

Community Preservation Fund: the Board prioritized possible CPF projects, including water quality, historic preservation, and open space.

Ethics: the Board set a public hearing for March 19th at 6pm to amend Chapter 13, "Code of Ethics." That and other draft laws can be found here.

Short Term Dockage: the Deputy Mayor discussed plans for short term docking in Mitchell Park.

Village Elections: the Village Clerk discussed options for future elections, including potentially turning over management to the Suffolk County Board of Elections to save costs. However, she recommended maintaining Village control to ensure same-day results, a long-standing community tradition.

Video Conferencing Law: A public hearing was held regarding the adoption of Chapter 34 of the Village Code, which would authorize the use of videoconferencing for Board meetings. The law would allow Board members to participate and vote remotely under extraordinary circumstances and could eventually allow for expanded public participation via platforms like Zoom.

Road & Sidewalk Maintenance: the Mayor confirmed that asphalt had been obtained to begin filling potholes. A solicitation of bids was authorized for sidewalk sawcutting repairs.

Paid Parking: the Board discussed possible parking plans for this season, including incorporating Adams Street and it's lots in the paid parking scheme, and hiring seasonal code enforcement.

Village Administrator: the Mayor announced that the board is in the final stages of hiring their preferred candidate.

Housing: the Workforce and Affordable Housing Committee discussed the Long Island Forward grant, which would study possible locations for community housing.
