Spring has arrived at White Oak! The trees are turning green... and then yellow from the pollen. The pollinators or pollinating. Baby antelope are being born. Birds are laying eggs, and the weather is warming up. It's been a busy spring here at White Oak. There have already been several calves born in our antelope herds: bongo (left), slender-horned gazelle, lesser kudu, roan (below) ... need we go on? Our Mississippi sandhill cranes, wattled cranes, grasshopper sparrows, curassows, and cassowary are all sitting on eggs, many that will be hatching soon.

Last but not least, a male okapi calf was born in February. That makes 48 okapis born at White Oak since 1991. So, 2021 has already been a productive year and we look forward to more arrivals in the next few months! Stay tuned!

Busy as a Bee... Spring is in the air and so is pollen. The same stuff that makes many of us sneeze and cough is also the life source for plants, trees, and bees. When bees collect pollen for their honey, they also move it around and help ensure the fertilization of all the plants they visit. As you may know, pollinators, especially bees, are in trouble due to pesticides and habitat loss, among other things. We can all do our part to help them by creating pollinator gardens. Learn more about bee-friendly gardening here. We here at White Oak are creating a garden to go along with all of the wildflowers already available to the local bees. So, here's to pollen and those busy little pollinators! Achoo!

St. Marys River Clean Up, 2021 St. Marys Riverkeeper is once again joining forces with Keep Nassau Beautiful and other organizations to clean up along the river on Earth Day, Saturday, April 24, 2021.   Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will not be able to host our traditional Earth Day Festival, but we hope you will all join us in making this a successful event as it has been in the past!
