My elderly mom has a difficult time with a consistent sleeping schedule. Changes like Daylight Savings make it even worse. Do you have any advice how to help her?

Sleep is so important to everyone, especially elderly. Lack of sleep can be dangerous since grogginess can increase the risk of accidental falls and injuries. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is vital to health and wellness.

Try to have your mom go to bed and wake up at the same time every day and have the same bedtime and morning routines.

Caffeine, alcohol and large meals can disrupt sleep, so it’s best to avoid those, especially in the evening. Try to limit the amount of water she drinks before bed too. This will help decrease her waking up for bathroom visits.

Spending time outside in natural sunlight and fresh air helps bodies regulate natural rhythms and promote balance in the mind and body. Exercise during the day is also a great way to help seniors fall asleep easier at night. 

Lastly, avoid napping during the day. If a nap is absolutely necessary, try to keep it under 20 minutes.
