Introduction to Cannabinoids and the Endocannabinoid System
What are cannabinoids, and what benefits do they bring? That’s been a common question over the last few years. Here’s a short overview.
A cannabinoid is a compound that interacts with the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is a system in our bodies that has receptors in the brain, nervous system, digestive system, and immune system. These receptors allow cannabinoids to bind and have an effect, whether they are endocannabinoids or those found in plants.
There are at least 120 different cannabinoids. There is some evidence that cannabinoids work best in the presence of other cannabinoids. We call this the entourage effect.
Cannabinoids can also bring relief when used topically (on the body). When used topically, they do not have psychoactive effects, but instead bring relief for pain and inflammation at the site. They are useful in bath and body care products, such as salves and bath soaks.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most famous cannabinoid. It can help with pain and appetite issues.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is showing a lot of promise for treatment of inflammation, seizures, anxiety, and many other conditions.
Cannabinol (CBN) is a fairly potent sleep aid and is being investigated for other benefits.
