April is Alcohol Awareness Month
Alcohol Awareness Month is an annual campaign and public health program organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as a way of increasing outreach and education regarding the dangers of alcoholism and issues related to alcohol. A big part of this month is to point out the stigma that still surrounds alcoholism and substance abuse in general.
This campaign gives public health bodies, community centers, and treatment facilities the chance to increase their efforts to reach people who may not fully understand the dangers of unhealthy alcohol consumption. There are plenty of ways communities and organizations can get involved. Check out helpful ideas and resources that CADCA offers.

Direct to Consumer Alcohol
Direct to Consumer Alcohol includes home delivery, curbside delivery, cocktails-to-go, and direct shipment. This form of access has expanded exponentially over the past year. With expanded access also comes expanded harms. According to Best Practice Guidance set forth by the National Liquor Law Enforcement Association (nllea.org), increasing access to alcohol not only increases consumption, but increases related harms such as violence, assaults, alcohol-attributable hospital admissions, and impaired driving to name a few. Consumers are also gravitating to larger pack sizes

The Alcohol Policy Resource Center has created an infographic highlighting Direct to Consumer Alcohol, and how Prevention and Law Enforcement can address the issue. Download a copy here. The APRC is very excited to offer a webinar on this topic as well. Our expert speakers are Cassandra Tourre, Director of Public Policy at the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA), and Carrie Christofes, Executive Director of the National Liquor Law Enforcement Association. Alcohol Prevention is Suicide Prevention: Understanding the
Associations Between Alcohol and Suicide
May 5, 2021 | 10 am - 11 am
Heavy episodic (or ābingeā drinking) is associated with higher reports of suicidal thoughts, making a suicide plan, and attempting suicide. Research has looked at distal risk factors (relatively stable characteristics/events leading up to suicidal behavior) and proximal risk factors (variables that increase risk in the moments before suicidal behavior). In this presentation, these factors will be reviewed, with a spotlight on how alcohol impacts judgment and decision making directly related to suicide. Studies that make the assertion that āalcohol prevention is suicide preventionā will be summarized, along with other associated variables. Implications for prevention and intervention will be discussed.
Speaker: Jason R. Kilmer, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington
