Spring Cleaning
As the weather starts to warm and we begin to clean up our lawns and plant our gardens, it's important to think about the choices we make and how they affect our harbor.
Eliminate Weeds Early.
Dig up small patches by hand. For larger areas use natural garden products from plant-derived concentrates such as clove oil or citric acid. Healthy soil leads to a healthy lawn and gives weeds less of an opportunity to take over.
Plant Thoughtfully.
As you begin your spring gardening, consider planting species native to the North Shore of Long Island. These plants will not only foster biodiversity and attract wildlife, but they'll cut down on lawn maintenance costs as well!
Long Island Native Plants
  • Black-eyed Susan
  • Indian grass
  • Milkweed
  • Cardinal flower
  • Wild hydrangea
  • Purple coneflower
These are just a few of the many plants and grasses that can be utilized in our own backyards!
