SPRING 2026 NEWSLETTER

A MESSAGE FROM LMCD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DAVID KRUEGER

Summer is fast approaching! At the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District, we are focused on protecting Lake Minnetonka while preserving its enjoyment for everyone who uses it.

We’ve recently updated our 2026–2027 Strategic Plan, recognizing aquatic invasive species (AIS) as a critical component of broader pollution prevention efforts. Addressing these challenges requires thoughtful planning, collaboration and a long-term perspective. In the months ahead, our Board will continue refining policies and exploring new strategies to strengthen prevention and management.

Our goal is simple: protecting Lake Minnetonka today and for future generations.

As we head into the 2026 summer season, I encourage you to enjoy all the lake has to offer — I look forward to seeing you on the water.

NIGHTTIME BOWFISHING RETURNS

Nighttime bowfishing is permitted on Lake Minnetonka again this year with a Special Event Permit running now through Tuesday, June 30. Bowfishing is allowed from 30 minutes after sunset until 1 a.m.

New this year: The permitted area now includes the entire lake.

SUMMER SAFETY

There’s nothing better than summer on Lake Minnetonka. Before you head out, take a moment to review our latest summer rules — designed to keep you safe and protect the lake for everyone to enjoy.

OWN YOUR WAKE

Wakes can pose real risks on the water, from endangering other lake users to causing damage along shorelines. That is why it is important for boaters to stay aware of the size and impact of their wake at all times.

All watercrafts must follow a five-miles per hour speed limit within 300 feet of shoreline and 150 feet of docks, anchored boats, swimmers and scuba divers’ warning flags.

GET SMART, STAY SAFE

Boating safely starts with the right knowledge. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers an online course to help boaters of all experience levels build confidence on the water. Operators age 21 and younger must have a valid watercraft operator's permit, and this course is an easy way to meet that requirement. This course is also available for anyone who wants to learn more about boating safety or enhance their current knowledge. Some insurance providers may also offer discounts for certification.

LMCD WELCOMES THREE NEW BOARD MEMBERS

We’re pleased to welcome Jane Anderson-Thomas, Ken Bertram and Matthew Timmers to the LMCD Board of Directors. Representing three of the 14 communities surrounding Lake Minnetonka, each brings a strong commitment to protecting and enhancing the lake for years to come.

The LMCD Board plays a critical role in guiding the future of Lake Minnetonka, and we’re excited to have Jane, Ken and Matthew’s leadership and perspective as part of that work.

SAVE THE LAKE COMMITTEE EXPANDS

The Save the Lake Committee has recently expanded with the addition of three resident members: Dan Baasen, Jim Brimeyer and Matt Mueller.

This volunteer advisory group supports the LMCD Board of Directors on ensuring the long-term sustainability of Lake Minnetonka.

We are glad to welcome these new voices to the committee.
