Caring for our community
and preparing for COVID-19
This week ACT postponed the Social Media, Marketing & Storytelling Workshop scheduled for March 10 due to the growing public health concerns related to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak. We do not wish to risk the health and safety of anyone in our community so we will reschedule the workshop to be an online webinar that will also be recorded. We will announce a new date and registration soon.

Spring2ACTion will be an important effort to raise needed funds to support your programs and services at a time of increased need and uncertainty. We know our community will continue to show its generosity, especially with an immediate call to action and an understanding of communal needs. ACT will keep you up to date on any new information as it relates to Spring2ACTion and as we monitor how this situation develops locally and across the country.

Many of you are making plans for your own organizations around the COVID-19 threat and we wanted to share helpful community information about this and also the 2020 Census – see the Census Corner below.

The City of Alexandria, the Alexandria Health Department, Inova Health System and the Alexandria City Public Schools will hold an online virtual information session on Thursday, March 12 from 8-9pm to provide information about the COVID-19 coronavirus.  The panelists will take questions about the COVID-19 coronavirus; how individuals can protect themselves and those around them; how government and the health care sector are preparing for additional impacts from the virus; and how businesses and nonprofit organizations can help. A recording of the session will be available after the session ends.  Please visit - https://www.alexandriava.gov/Coronavirus for more details.

Census Corner:
Counting ALL Alexandrians
Beginning in mid-March, all Alexandrians will be called upon to be counted as part of the 2020 Census. Mandated by the U.S. Constitution, every ten years our country counts every resident. ACT envisions a City that embraces residents from all walks of life and where everyone can fully participate in our civic life and economic prosperity. Census data helps us understand the full story of our community by counting everyone who lives here.

ACT is allocating $10,000 for Census Mini Grants to assist with outreach and awareness building activities in hard-to-count communities in Alexandria.   We anticipate awarding $250 - $1,000 grants, based on the need and request. For more information, click here or on the Census - Everyone Counts image .
Why Spring2ACTion Matters
The Child & Family Network Centers
Because of Spring2ACTion, we were able to prepare 138 low-income children for success in kindergarten and in life. Children who would otherwise fall through the cracks and enter elementary school with a huge achievement gap. For children and families hovering just above the poverty level, a high-quality, free early education in Alexandria is often inaccessible.

That’s why Spring2ACTion is so important to the community. Because of Spring2ACTion, CFNC is able to continue providing a bilingual, high-quality early education and wraparound health and family services to the kids in our community who need it the most.
