New Feature: Incremental Rehearsal
We constantly monitor SpringMath data, and we have noticed that classes are taking longer to master some skills than others. To help with this, Dr. VanDerHeyden is creating some additional booster resources for those skills, in the form of Incremental Rehearsal.
What is Incremental Rehearsal?
IR is a quick but powerful intervention to help increase retention and build fluency. It pairs known and unknown math facts in a specific order and ratio to create a concentrated practice session.
How does it work?
Watch this video of Dr. Matt Burns from the University of Missouri demonstrating it with a student.
How does it work in SpringMath?
Note: We will be gradually rolling this out over the next few months so you may or may not see it, depending on your grade level and where you are in the Classwide sequence. It won’t be for every skill; just those we have noticed are "sticky." If you need a boost for the skill you’re on, be sure to check the article “Booster Resources” in Support.
If you see a Boost It button just above your progress monitoring graph, click that to access the materials and directions for Day 1. (Note that the button will show up on the skill prior to the “sticky” skill so that you can start prepping your students ahead of time.) The materials consist of a short video teaching the focus fact for the day, and then slides in PDF form, presenting a mixture of that fact with known facts.
There is nothing to print or prepare ahead of time! Just show the video to your students, and then project the facts one-at-a-time in front of the class. Have your students say the problem and answer aloud as a whole group. When you log in the next day, you will have access to the Day 2 materials.
This will only take about 3 extra minutes per day and will provide a strong boost to your students’ fluency!
Feeling left out because you don't have a Boost It button? Never fear! The materials for Subtraction 0-9 are also in Support. (Division 0-12 will be available soon.) Look in Resources for Teachers > Classwide Intervention > Booster Resources.
