A Family of Ducks Tours Clearcreek Elementary
Does it get anymore adorable? Since the beginning of Clearcreek Elementary’s Sensory Garden, which opened in 2018, the PreK – 1st Grade school has had an annual visitor to the property. A hen has made Clearcreek Elementary’s Sensory Garden home for five (5) years, using the outdoor garden space to build nests and lay her eggs.
“This mom trusts our space to safely build a nest and lay her eggs,” said Sarah Wilguess, Occupational Therapist with Springboro Schools and one of the lead project organizers for the Sensory Garden since its inception. “The Sensory Garden is free of predators, and I think she enjoys the soothing sounds of the windchimes to help keep her babies calm at night.”
This year, the staff at Clearcreek tried something new, to provide a less-confined space for the duck family. The mother duck and her twelve (12) ducklings were walked out of the school building to relocate to their new home behind Clearcreek Elementary, which is a wooded space. “The mother duck had to have a gentle reminder to keep an inside voice when walking down the hallway and the ducklings are still working on maintaining their single line,” joked Ms. Wilguess.
While families were notified last week about preschool lottery applications, there’s still no word yet on if these new ducklings’ applications were accepted.
This family of ducks has gone word-wide! CNN shared the story with their network, where it was picked up by news stations across the globe! More than 150+ news stations ran this story, including coverage in Sweden and Japan. Check out the coverage from news stations in Kentucky, New Orleans, New York, Oregon, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The Sensory Garden’s primary purpose at Clearcreek Elementary is to serve as a self-contained garden environment that allows both students and staff to enjoy a wide variety of sensory experiences, helping to stimulate everyone’s senses.

The criteria required to be named as a Distinguished Graduate is included below (as it is written in the SHS Program of Studies):
DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE
Students must meet the following criteria (must meet #1 and one of the criteria of #2) to be eligible for recognition of a Distinguished Graduate of Springboro High School:

2. A composite score of thirty (30) or above on the ACT and/or 1400 or above on the SAT.

Dennis Elementary's "Cultural Curators" Present to Board of Education
4th Grade Dennis Elementary students from Mrs. Covey's Reading class presented their latest project to the Board of Education at April 26's meeting.
The students recently completed their Cultural Fiction unit by becoming, "Cultural Curators." Each student chose a country, then collected facts and items from that country to display in a mini-museum. Belize, Cuba, Turkey, France, Russia, India, and more were on display. We all learned so much from their research!
The Board of Education spent time with each student learning about the project. Thank you Mrs. Covey, students, and to our Board of Education!

Student Health Services
District Nurse, Bronwyn Patterson, RN, BSN
Springboro Schools has a dedicated Student Health Services Web Page. Each of our schools has a Registered Nurse (RN) in the school clinic. Their goal is to promote health services and education for all students. Educational outcomes for students are impacted by physical, social, and emotional health, and our school nurses serve as liaisons between education and health care, linking the school, home, and community.
Healthy children make better students and better students make healthy communities. You can find all school health forms under the Student Health Forms Page, as well as parent guides and resources.

Treasurer's Department
Treasurer & Chief Financial Officer, Terrah Stacy
|
|
The Treasurer’s Department oversees the financial operations of the entire district, including payroll of more than 600 employees. The Treasurer operates as the Chief Financial Officer and reports to the Board of Education.
Did you Know? In 2019, the district anticipated to be deficit spending 4.1 million in FY21 and FY22, and a total of 13 million by FY24. To address the deficit spending, the district implemented a cost containment plan in FY20 by identifying operating efficiencies to contain costs, while limiting the effect to core instruction. This plan reduced costs by $6 million over the forecast period.
Additionally, increases in property values above anticipated, $5 million in one time COVID-19 relief funds, and the passage of the PI levy in May of 2021 that reduced general fund expenses by 1.5 million annually, all have helped offset our general fund costs and reduce deficit spending. Our current Five Year Forecast anticipates deficit spending in four of the next five years. Springboro is the 6th lowest spending district in the State of Ohio, therefore making additional reductions would affect core instruction.
Five Year forecasts are updated twice per year per Ohio Law. Any revenue or expenditures changes that arise between forecasts, will be updated during the next forecast filing. At this time, the district does not know of any changes to current revenue or expenses.
