Springboro Schools' "Go Global" Classroom

U.S. Dept. of State’s Fulbright Award Recipient Visits Peru & Implements Global Classrooms at Dennis Elementary.

In July of 2018, the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced that Debra Covey, an Intervention Specialist at Dennis Elementary, was offered a Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms grant.

Deb Covey, as well as Heather Kogler from Dennis Elementary, worked to put a curriculum plan in place for this past school year (2018-2019) that supported teacher fluency in global education. As part of this curriculum, students from Dennis Elementary participated in “Go Global Week.” During “Go Global Week,” students watched short films about nine (9) different countries, read folktales, created crafts, played games from around the world, learned about children's lives in other countries, and wrote postcards to students from around the world.

Deb Covey took these postcards, written by Dennis Elementary students, to Peru this summer to share with the students Deb taught, as part of the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms grant. Covey was one of approximately seventy-six (76) U.S. citizens who were selected to travel abroad through the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential.

Covey said, “Global education is all about encouraging students to see and understand that people from other countries and cultures are more similar to us than different. When children exhibit global competence they have learned the attitudes, skills and knowledge needed to understand the perspectives of people in other parts of the world.”

Ms. Covey has been with Springboro Schools since the 2012-2013 school year, where she served as a 6th Grade Teacher at Springboro Intermediate. Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, Deb began as an Intervention Specialist at Dennis Elementary. Ms. Covey has also served as a Spelling Bee Advisor, Reading Intervention Specialist, and Title I Summer School Reading Teacher.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to build relations between the people of the United States and the people of other countries that are needed to solve global challenges. The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program, which operates in over 160 countries worldwide.

Since its establishment in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has given more than 370,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

JROTC Completes Summer Leadership Program

Springboro High School Junior Air Force ROTC cadets recently completed their annual summer leadership program, the Ohio Valley Leadership School (OVLS).
The program is a Junior ROTC-sponsored camp that occurs throughout the nation at various locations. In total, 37 rising sophomore-to-senior cadets from SHS participated in this five day leadership camp held at Wright State University and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. OVLS was comprised of 9 schools and 156 cadets from Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Michigan.

Of the top 30 awards given out at OVLS, cadets from Springboro took home 15 of those awards. Rising senior, Paige Sullivan received the Commandant's Award as the overall #1 top graduate in the entire camp of 156. Paige also took home the Iron Woman Award as the top female for doing 99 push-ups in one minute and then 70 sit-ups in one minute.

Another rising senior, Tori Kenline was named the Top Squadron Commander. Further, rising junior, Elijah Barker finished as the #5 overall graduate and received the Top Flight Commander Award. Meanwhile, rising senior, Caroline Majors clinched the Top Bay Chief Award. Tori Chapman won the Top First Year Cadet Award, graduating #6 overall. Faith Bergeron was awarded the Top Second Year Cadet Award and was #7 overall. SHS also took home the majority of Distinguished Graduate (DG) Awards. The DG Award is given to the top 10% of graduates among the entire camp. DGs included rising junior – Kaylah Forland; rising sophomores – Samuel Parlett, Sarah Walowsky, Linus Kennedy, Anna Jones, and Megan Gibbons. Rounding out the SHS awards were Linus Kennedy who won the Male Fleetfoot Award with the fastest 1-mile run time of 5:51 among all male cadets. Lastly, Anna Jones was the fastest female, she took home the Female Fleetfoot Award with a run time of 6:37.

Of the top 25 graduates from OVLS, 13 of them were from SHS. OVLS is the culmination of a year in ROTC, where the cadets get to apply what they've learned in the previous year.

Springboro Police Department App

In addition to the numerous safety/security measures conducted within the district, Springboro Schools would like to remind the public that the Springboro Police Department has an App for smartphones that could be used as another measure to keep our students safe.

The App has many functionalities, including receiving safety alerts, viewing press releases on criminal activity in the area, general public safety information, etc.

However, the one function students and parents might be most interested in is the "School Crime/Tip" button whereby anyone can anonymously send a message to our School Resource Officers to alert them to any known or suspected criminal activity that is occurring or planned at our schools. Simply tap that button and send a message directly to the police (You can also use that function to call the Police Department, as well).

The App can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple iTunes by simply searching, "Springboro Police Department."
