Dennis Elementary Class Video Chats with Students in Bangladesh
Students in Mrs. Covey’s 5th Grade class at Dennis Elementary had a unique opportunity today to speak with students at the Bashgari No. 1 Government Primary School located in Bangladesh.
As part of a series originally called, “Mystery Skypes,” Mrs. Covey’s class takes part in a global guessing game between classes all around the world. Given the wider use of Google Meet/Zoom, these video chats are referred to as “Mystery Meets” by Mrs. Covey’s students.
Students from each class meet up in a video call and try to guess each other's location through a series of yes/no questions. In addition, the students learn more about other individuals from across the globe. Mrs. Covey will have her students research the country the students are from, then go over what was learned after the video chat.
The Dennis Elementary students spoke with 5th Grade students in Raihana Haque’s class. Each class would take turns asking a question, then answering. Once it was known where the schools were located, the students asked further questions about one another. The questions from the students in Bangladesh included, “What are common jobs in your area?” “What is your favorite food?” “What do you expect as a nice Christmas gift?” and “Are cows sacred in the United States?” Mrs. Covey’s students learned that the children at Bashgari No. 1 attend school Saturdays through Thursdays (9:30a - 4:00p), with Friday serving as their “weekend,” and that their special customs are the Bengali New Year, as well as their language movement.
This is not the first “Mystery Meet” held by Mrs. Covey, as her classes have also spoken with schools in Amsterdam, Denmark, France, Peru, and Senegal. Next week, on Thursday, May 12, Mrs. Covey’s 4th Grade class will be speaking to another school in a certain country, but (shhh!) it must be kept a mystery!

Brian Bales Introduced to Springboro Community at “Meet the Coach” Night
On Monday, May 9, the Springboro community had the pleasure of formally meeting Coach Bales at a “Meet the Coach” event held in Domino’s Gymnasium at SHS, home of the Springboro Panthers.
Originally scheduled to be hosted in the SHS Media Center, the “Meet the Coach” night was moved to Domino’s Gymnasium due to the expected large number of attendees. All current, former, and future Springboro Panthers, as well as their families, were invited to attend and welcome Coach Bales to the Springboro community.
With his family by his side, Coach Bales spoke to the crowd of students, parents, and community members Monday night, expressing his excitement to be joining Springboro Schools. "We are beyond excited to be bringing in Brian Bales as the next Head Basketball Coach,” said Austin Rhoads, Springboro Schools’ Athletic Director. "Brian's coaching accomplishments are outweighed by the impact that he has made on young people. He is a culture builder, a leader, and a role model that we expect to rejuvenate our program."
Brian Bales will serve as the district's Coordinator of Behavior and Intervention Services for K-12, in addition to being the Head Boys’ Basketball Coach. “Brian Bales will not just have an impact on the court, but in our classrooms and our community as a whole,” said Superintendent Larry Hook. “Brian brings a culture of positivity, and we look forward to seeing the impact he has on our students as the Coordinator of Behavior and Intervention Services.”
Bales comes to Springboro after leading the Franklin Wildcats program since 2007. During his tenure at Franklin, Coach Bales recorded a 267-120 record, including 10 Southwest Buckeye League Championships. Bales has been named District 15 Coach of the Year three times (2012, 2014, 2015), AP Division II Coach of the Year twice (2012, 2015), and OHSCBA Coach of the Year (2015).

District's COVID-19 Data Dashboard
State of Ohio Updated Health Policies
Based on the State of Ohio’s updated health policies, K-12 Schools in Ohio are no longer required to report COVID-19 cases to their local health departments. According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), school districts will only need to report cases if the school tested a student for COVID-19 and the result was positive.
Moving forward, Springboro Schools will follow this latest ODH guidance. As a result, the COVID-19 Dashboard will no longer be updated/posted to the district website. Our archives from the 2021-2022 school year will remain available for view. If guidance from the State of Ohio, ODH, or the Warren County Health District were to change, our district will adjust accordingly and communicate any updates to our district families.

Student Health Services
As a reminder, Springboro Schools has a dedicated Student Health Services Web Page. Each of our schools has a Registered Nurse (RN) in the school clinic. Their goal is to promote health services and education for all students. Educational outcomes for students are impacted by physical, social, and emotional health, and our school nurses serve as liaisons between education and health care, linking the school, home, and community.
Healthy children make better students and better students make healthy communities. You can find all school health forms under the Student Health Forms page, as well as parent guides and resources on our COVID-19 page.

Area Eligibility On Free/Reduced Meals
for 2022-2023 School Year - UPDATED
The statewide area eligibility for meal distribution, stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, will no longer be free for students beginning July 1, 2022.
Parents/Guardians who feel their family will still qualify for free/reduced meals passed July 1, 2022 will have to submit a new application (paper or online via PaySchools). The application for 2022-23 will not be available until after July 1, 2022. Springboro Schools will share this link when available.
Those students currently eligible for free/reduced meals will carry over for the first 30 days of school in the fall. After that, without a new approved application on file, the benefit will be cut off. Lunch prices for students with a free/reduced meal plan will again be $0.40. Paid lunch prices have not been determined yet, as the Federal reimbursements rates for fiscal year 2023 have not yet been announced. The free reimbursement rate information is needed to assist in setting paid student lunch prices.
Under the current guidance, lunches served to ALL students will be at no cost for the 2021-2022 school year up to June 30, 2022. Details are listed below, as to the specifics on what constitutes a school lunch under this policy.
Lunch at No Cost Includes:
Grades 1 – 8: Entree, grain, choice of 2 different vegetables, 1 fruit & milk
Grades 9 – 12: Entree, grain, choice of 2 different vegetables, choice of 2 different fruits & milk.
Students must select a minimum of 1 fruit or vegetable + 2 other items to be considered a lunch meal. Students are encouraged to take all 5 components (entree, grain, fruit, vegetable & milk). All students will be charged for ala carte purchases, just as they always have been.
Families are still encouraged to submit free/reduced meal applications to ensure that they do not lose their free/reduced status at the conclusion of this statewide policy. This is very important, as funding for this statewide policy will expire on June 30, 2022.
This policy is effective immediately and remains in effect until June 30, 2022, or until expiration of the federally declared public health emergency or until funding is depleted, whichever is earlier.

Lost or Misplaced P-EBT Cards: If a family has accidentally thrown away the P-EBT card or has lost the card, the family should call Conduent (the P-EBT card vendor) at 1-866-386-3071 to request a replacement if the card is lost, stolen or damaged.
It is the same process SNAP customers do to replace the Ohio Direction EBT card. When the family calls, their old card will be locked, and a new card will be mailed to them. If the family finds their lost card, they will not be able to use it once they have reported it lost or stolen.
The family will have to wait to receive the replacement card in the mail, which can take 7-10 days. Additional information to share with families on how to replace a lost or misplaced card is available on the P-EBT website.

SCAC Continuing to Help Community Families In Need
Springboro Schools will continue providing meals to families on a routine basis, during the school year. Students who are on Free/Reduced Lunch or apart of the “Boro Backpack Program” will still be able to receive food thanks to the Springboro Community Assistance Center (SCAC). Springboro Schools has been in contact directly with these families, regarding details on food pickup and distribution.
Free/Reduced Lunch with Springboro Schools:
Mondays (3:00 - 4:00pm)*
Springboro Community Assistance Center (SCAC)
1629 S. Main St. Springboro, OH 45066
Perishable, Meats, Dairy, Cleaning Supplies, & Boxed Food Only
Please know the SCAC is here to help all families that are in need. We understand there are a lot of families that have not used a food pantry before, and this can be uncomfortable, at first.
Also, the Springboro Community Assistance Center (SCAC) will provide further details on their Facebook page.
