Springboro Schools Significantly Exceeds State Standards According to State Report Card
"Thank you to our teachers, staff, students, and community for the work they have put in to make this possible." - Superintendent Carrie Hester

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) released the 2021-2022 Ohio School Report Cards showing how each school and district performed during the 2021-2022 school year. For the first time in two (2) years, school districts received a rating on the state report cards released Thursday, September 15.

The report card will look different than in years past. As opposed to prior ratings of letter grades A-F, report cards in the State of Ohio will now feature a new overall rating system of one (1) to five (5) stars. The last time schools were given a letter grade on the state report card was the 2018-2019 school year. The State of Ohio said it would be unfair to schools to grade them in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years amid COVID-19 disruptions.

While districts and schools will not receive overall ratings this year, the report cards will include five (5) rated components and various report-only data. These five (5) components will receive ratings from one (1) to five (5) stars. The Guide to 2022 Ohio School Report Cards provides an overview and explanation of these key components.

Schools still will be evaluated on how well their students are doing on state tests, reading proficiency in kindergarten through third grade, graduation rates, how students are progressing year over year, how well schools are able to close gaps for underprivileged students such as English language learners or students with disabilities, and how ready a student is to enter the workforce, college or the military after graduation.

As published today by ODE, Springboro Schools’ 2021-2022 State Report Card results illustrate the district earned “5-Star Ratings,” the highest rating possible, for “significantly exceeding state standards” on four (4) of the (5) five components measured at the district level. Springboro Schools received its lone “4-Star Rating” on the Early Literacy component.

The state report card is one of several tools the district uses to measure our schools' performances in areas critical to success in learning. We fully recognize there are always going to be areas of growth and we are addressing all these daily throughout our school district. Our Curriculum Department, led by Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Andrea Cook, will present the district’s data to the Board of Education on Wednesday, October 12.

“This is only one part of Springboro Schools’ story,” said Superintendent Carrie Hester. “We are thrilled to be rated amongst the top school districts in Warren County and the State of Ohio. In Springboro Schools, preschool through high school, staff, teachers, and community, we are all Panthers, and the work we do on a daily-basis builds towards academic success and a positive climate culture. Thank you to our teachers, staff, students, and community for the work they have put in to make this possible. Report cards focus on assessments and what the district has already done, and not how the district plans to make improvements in the future. To get a full, clear picture of our district’s efforts, I encourage you to volunteer at our schools, attend our many events, talk to educators, parents, students, and community partners, and view our websitesocial media, and district Strategic Plan. There are a lot of great things happening in Springboro Schools!”

For more information and to help you better understand what Ohio School Report Cards measure, families and the community can review the Ohio Department of Education’s Guide to 2022 Ohio School Report Cards.
Strategic Plan
Strategic planning is an ongoing integrated process in high performing organizations.

A strategic plan is the vehicle that allows an organization to look at its future. Through visioning, developing a mission, examining core values, and setting achievable goals, the district moves toward attainment of school improvement.

Scholarship In Honor of Logan Turner Awarded to SHS/WCCC Graduate
Andy McCloud, Springboro High School/Warren County Career Center Graduate ('22)

A recent Springboro High School (SHS)/Warren County Career Center (WCCC) graduate earned the "Logan Michael Turner Scholarship," established by the Sinclair Foundation.

Andy McCloud, who participated in Springboro Robotics during his four (4) years at SHS from 2018 through his graduation in 2022, is currently pursuing an Associate's degree in Electronics Engineering Technology and was awarded the "Logan Michael Turner Scholarship" in honor of Logan Turner (SHS '08), one of the nine victims of the Oregon District shooting in 2019.

The scholarship was created by Logan Turner's parents, Danita and Michael Turner, to help Sinclair students pursuing degrees in engineering. Logan received his Associate of Science in Engineering Technology from Sinclair, after graduating from Springboro High School.

While at SHS, Andy McCloud was an integral part of his Springboro Robotics team, "Electro-Mechanically Controlled Chaos (EMC^2)," as one of two lead builders. Andy also oversaw the mechanical design and prototyping for his team.

“I am very honored to be chosen for the Logan Michael Turner Scholarship," said McCloud. "I had heard wonderful things about Logan, that he was a bright student with a promising future ahead of him. More importantly, I had heard he was a wonderful person, son, and friend. I hope that in a way, I can honor Logan’s legacy by doing well in my studies and in a future career in the field of engineering."
Fishing Club Reels 'em In!

Hook, line, and sinker! The Fishing Club partnered up with Springboro High School (SHS) students in Mr. Yost's and Ms. Williamson's class to cast off at the pond behind SHS.

You couldn't have asked for better weather, as the students all worked together to learn the techniques, often finding quite a bit of success! It was a great experience! Oh, the fishing stories they'll have to tell!

Step Right Up! Welcome to SHS Carnival Games!

Mr. Broderick's Introduction to Engineering class at Springboro High School (SHS) has spent the last month working with the design process to create accurate launching devices for their "Carnival Games."

During this time the students have collected data, analyzed the data in Google Sheets, and used that data to make modifications to their designs. The students were then tasked with creating Carnival Games that would both be enjoyable and "frustrating" for the player to win at the game.
Digital Ticketing For Athletics
The Springboro Panthers will continue its all digital ticketing for athletic events during 2022-23 school year.

Info on ticket prices, athletic passes, and sponsorship opportunity is available on the Springboro Panthers Athletic Website.

"B-O-R-O! Let's go, Boro!"
A Message From Springboro Schools

Having a school district with a climate of respect and kindness is important. Misunderstandings are going to happen. When they do, please remember to reach out to your child’s teacher first. From there, if necessary, contact the school Principal. If further assistance is needed, any member of our Administration or Central Office staff is here to help. Email, call, or schedule an appointment.

We are here to serve you, our community, and the students and staff in this great district. We want an experience here for our students and staff that is academically successful, safe, secure, and transparent. This will continue to be a top priority for our district and thank you all for contributing to the enormous success of Springboro Schools.
SHS Students Named Semifinalists in National Merit Scholarship Program

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, including three (3) Springboro High School students, in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Springboro High School students Anna Barker, Samuel Langer, and Shawn Syed have all been named a Semifinalist in the NMSC Program.

These academically talented high school students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Approximately 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2023. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced in four (4) nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 330,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
SHS Senior Speaks with Governor DeWine

Recently, Governor Mike DeWine visited the Warren County Career Center (WCCC). Meghan Stephens, a Senior from Springboro High School (SHS) in the Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics program at WCCC, was one of four students asked to speak to Gov. DeWine about the program and help to provide a tour for Gov. DeWine of the working lab.

“Ohio's career centers are so very important,” said Gov. DeWine. “Schools like Warren County Career Center are doing a great job preparing students for the workforce and for continuing education.”

Congratulations to Meghan Stephens and the continued partnership between WCCC and SHS!
SHS Marching Band Earns Superior Ratings

Congratulations to the Springboro High School (SHS) Marching Band who earned a Superior rating this past weekend at the Hamilton High School "Band-O-Rama."
The SHS Band took 3rd place out of 14 bands and once again qualified for OMEA State Marching Band Finals!

Prior to this, the SHS Marching Band competed and took 3rd Place overall at the Bellbrook High School Marching Band Invitational. This was the band's first outing of the season.

The SHS Band will be back in action again on Saturday, October 8 at Wilmington High School as the SHS Marching Band presents its 2022 competition show, "Now Boarding." We hope to see you there!
SJHS News Interviews Superintendent

Students in Mr. Hernandez's Video Production Class sat down with Superintendent Carrie Hester for an interview on "SJHS News." This investigative report asked the hard-hitting questions we all want to know, "Describe your daily routine as a Superintendent?" "What are your hobbies?" and "What is a good song you enjoy listening to on your way to work?"

Mrs. Hester expressed her excitement in wanting to meet the students, and we appreciate SJHS News for inviting the Superintendent on their broadcast as a guest.

Thank you to the students and Mr. Hernandez! The Video Production Class is producing great work!
Free-Reduced Lunch Waivers
The USDA Free-Reduced Lunch Waiver Program for all students has expired, due to federal funding. Families will once again need to complete a current school year Free-Reduced Meal Application to see if their student(s) qualify based on the income.

Virtual Peace Rooms
Students in Ms. Jung's class at Springboro Intermediate created "Virtual Peace Rooms." These virtual spaces give students a "place to go" when they are feeling stressed, anxious, overloaded, or need a brain break.

"Listen & Learn" - Superintendent Hester Visits School Building Staff

Throughout this school year, Superintendent Carrie Hester will be visiting staff at each school building. These "Listen & Learn" sessions have already gotten underway, as Mrs. Hester just finished up her first set of visits with each school building.

Mrs. Hester "moved her office" to each school building on a specific day with an open door for staff to come in, meet Mrs. Hester, and chat about anything on their mind: Work, staff/student support, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, sports, you name it!

Mrs. Hester visited with each of the six (6) school buildings this month and will continue another set of "Listen & Learn" visits with staff again later this school year.

Mrs. Hester will also hold community "Meet & Greets" to spend time with parents and community members in Springboro. The first "Meet & Greet" will be Tuesday, October 11 from 8:30am - 10:30am at Muddy Goose in Springboro. Stop on by and visit with Mrs. Hester. It'd be great to hear from you!
"Welcome to StarBOOKS. How May I Help You?"

Springboro High School (SHS) sophomore and senior students in Mrs. VanBuskirk's and Mrs. Jones's classes participated in a "Starbooks" day in the SHS Library with Mrs. Tinch.

Throughout their class period, students completed a "Book Tasting Menu" to rate and review a variety of books in hopes of finding an Independent Reading book for the first quarter. No word yet on if there are future plans for a drive-thru. It was definitely a BREW-tiful day to read a LATTE! (Ba Dum Tss)
SHS AP Research Students Hold Topic Talks

Fifteen (15) SHS AP Research students conducted a series of “Topic Talks” with SHS staff and Central Office administration for their AP Capstone project. These talks served as the initial step of the students’ research process to work toward writing their literature review.

Students met with each staff member to share a 3-4 minute overview on their proposed topic, then listened to questions and comments from staff about their research. SHS Teachers Bridget Lewellen and Gail Dauber put together the format for this activity and will continue to work with the students throughout their research process. The students will complete multiple rounds over the course of the next few months during the school year, for them to see the progression of their research throughout the entire research process.

AP Capstone is an innovative diploma program that provides students with an opportunity to engage in rigorous scholarly practice of the core academic skills necessary for successful college completion. This was a wonderful opportunity for our SHS students to stretch and grow as student researchers!
Student Health Services
District Nurse, Bronwyn Patterson, RN, BSN

Springboro Schools has a dedicated Student Health Services Web Page. Each of our schools has a Registered Nurse (RN) in the school clinic. Their goal is to promote health services and education for all students. Educational outcomes for students are impacted by physical, social, and emotional health, and our school nurses serve as liaisons between education and health care, linking the school, home, and community.

Healthy children make better students and better students make healthy communities. You can find all school health forms under the Student Health Forms Page, as well as parent guides and resources.
