Reagan Scacchetti, Beloved Student
It is with great sadness that Springboro Schools learned about the passing of Reagan Scacchetti, 4th Grade student at Five Points Elementary. Reagan, who was diagnosed eight (8) years ago with Hypothalamic/Optic Chiasmatic Glioma, an extremely rare form of brain cancer, passed away on Monday, May 16 at 7:40pm with family by her side.
Reagan’s passing is a huge loss for Five Points Elementary, Springboro Schools and the entire Springboro community. We understand that this can be a difficult time for the families whose lives have been touched by Reagan. A team of counselors was made available to provide emotional support for those Five Points Elementary students and staff in need.
In November of 2021, Reagan's family and friends joined the entire staff and all students at Five Points Elementary to help celebrate a balloon launch in support of Reagan, which consisted of over 200 purple balloons. Community members were encouraged to join everyone in supporting Reagan, an amazing young girl, who was the kindest soul and one who was always willing to help others. In a show of support for Reagan and the Scacchetti family, students and staff have been encouraged to wear purple (“Purple Out”) throughout this school year, Reagan’s favorite color.
Reagan Scacchetti has been fighting like a champion over the last eight years. The district’s deepest sympathies go to the Scacchetti family during this difficult time.

First Annual Patricia McCandless Memorial Scholarship Presented at SHS Senior Awards Night
Springboro High School (SHS) Seniors Kaylee Pham and McKenzie Paul were awarded the first annual Patricia McCandless Memorial Scholarship at the SHS Senior Awards Night held Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at the Vince Ross Memorial Auditorium.
The Patricia McCandless Memorial Scholarship provides a one-year, $7,000 scholarship to two (2) graduating seniors of SHS. This scholarship honors the spirit and character of Patricia McCandless, who left her entire estate to Springboro High School after her passing in 2018.
“Ms. McCandless, an English Teacher at Clearcreek High School (what is now known as Springboro High School) from 1961-1968, made an unprecedented donation that will have a lasting impact on the students of Springboro for many years,” said Scott Marshall, District Communications Coordinator.
The estate for Ms. McCandless, which totals $471,644.01 and was received by the district in June of 2021, will be used over the course of many years towards scholarships for graduating seniors at Springboro High School, as per Ms. McCandless’ wish. A committee was assembled during the 2021-2022 school year, comprised of administration, staff, community members, and friends of Ms. McCandless, in order to best determine how these funds would be distributed over the course of the next several decades. This committee looked to best capture the interests and wishes of Ms. McCandless, while also honoring the extreme generosity from the former English Teacher. From there, a selection committee made up of local community members determined the scholarship award recipients, based on applications submitted by students.
Scott Marshall said, “A lot of research has been done over the last eleven months, to learn more about Ms. McCandless. In speaking with several close friends of Patty’s, and her colleagues from the University of Illinois and Ohio State, one word has been brought up by every single person to describe Ms. McCandless, ‘Kind.’ Throughout Patty’s life, she impacted many individuals with her hard work, intelligence, and her patience. It’s beyond impressive that Ms. McCandless will continue to impact the students of Springboro for decades to come, by giving back to a district that helped pave the way for a wonderful human being. In a word, Ms. McCandless is inspiring.”
Springboro Schools would like to acknowledge and thank Skye Arseneau (University of Illinois), Daniel Burgard (University of North Texas Health Science Center), Raimund Goerler (Ohio State University), Jim Mears (FHS Class of ’57, Former Mayor of Franklin, OH), Ann Pitsinger (SHS Class of ’64) and Sharon Smith (FHS Class of ’57) for sharing their memories of Patty McCandless.

Springboro Schools Raises Over $7,000 to Benefit School in Africa
Clean water means hope. Springboro Schools has raised $7,100 (and counting) to help build a well for Chitipi Primary School in Lilongwe, Malawi, Africa. With the help of teacher Randy Youst, 7th and 8th grade students at Springboro Junior High School have partnered with DOXA Wells, a Springboro based company, to build a new well for the nearly 1,500 students at Chitipi.
Mr. Youst saw an opportunity to make an impact in the community by enlisting the help of his Junior High students to work with DOXA Wells, who would be supplying the equipment and providing the install. With such high demand for clean water near Chitipi Primary School, an additional well is needed. The importance of having a long-lasting, dependable well is crucial for clean and safe drinking water. Mr. Youst will be visiting Malawi this summer and plans to setup a video chat between both sets of students at Chitipi and Springboro Junior High.
The students set out to hold a series of fundraisers over several weeks, with the goal being to raise $6,500, which is the estimated cost to provide a new well. These fundraisers included a Candy Sale, a Dodgeball event, and the Student Council donating proceeds from their Junior High Dance to the cause. The fundraising also included a “Walk for Water” where students walked 2.5 miles (or 10 laps) around the track at Watkins Stadium, carrying a full bucket of water, to simulate what it is like for the people in Malawi who walk 1-5 hours each day to retrieve dirty water for their village/school when there is no alternative. This inspired the name for the fundraising campaign, “Springboro Walk for Water.” The students not only achieved their fundraising goal, but eclipsed the mark, with more on the way. Additional funds raised will go toward repairs on existing wells.
“This is an important life lesson,” said Maureen Reuther, Principal at Springboro Junior High. “School is not just about academics, it’s also about life and how we treat one another. Sometimes we are going to have to help support those that are less fortunate, and I’m proud of our students and staff for stepping up and making a positive impact on those around the world.”

District's COVID-19 Data Dashboard
State of Ohio Updated Health Policies
Based on the State of Ohio’s updated health policies, K-12 Schools in Ohio are no longer required to report COVID-19 cases to their local health departments. According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), school districts will only need to report cases if the school tested a student for COVID-19 and the result was positive.
Moving forward, Springboro Schools will follow this latest ODH guidance. As a result, the COVID-19 Dashboard will no longer be updated/posted to the district website. Our archives from the 2021-2022 school year will remain available for view. If guidance from the State of Ohio, ODH, or the Warren County Health District were to change, our district will adjust accordingly and communicate any updates to our district families.

Student Health Services
As a reminder, Springboro Schools has a dedicated Student Health Services Web Page. Each of our schools has a Registered Nurse (RN) in the school clinic. Their goal is to promote health services and education for all students. Educational outcomes for students are impacted by physical, social, and emotional health, and our school nurses serve as liaisons between education and health care, linking the school, home, and community.
Healthy children make better students and better students make healthy communities. You can find all school health forms under the Student Health Forms page, as well as parent guides and resources on our COVID-19 page.

New Free-Reduced Lunch Program Details
Pandemic Waivers Ending May 26
Under the National School Lunch Program, lunches served to all students were at no cost for the 2021-2022 school year. The federal government determined the USDA pandemic school lunch waivers, which allowed free meals to all students, to expire June 30, 2022.
Families who believe they qualify for the Free-Reduced Lunch Program will need to submit a new application for approval. If you are currently approved for the Free-Reduced Lunch Program, you would have thirty (30) school days to submit a new application.
Applications can be found under the “Parents” tab on www.springboro.org. NOTE: Lunch prices for the 2022-23 school year may be subject to change.
Paid lunch prices have not been determined yet, and are subject to change, as the federal reimbursements rates for fiscal year 2023 (2022-2023 school year) have not yet been announced. The free reimbursement rate information is needed to assist in setting paid student lunch prices.
Details are listed below, as to the specifics on what constitutes a school lunch under the Free-Reduced Lunch Program:
Lunch at No Cost Includes:
Grades 1 – 8: Entree, grain, choice of 2 different vegetables, 1 fruit & milk
Grades 9 – 12: Entree, grain, choice of 2 different vegetables, choice of 2 different fruits & milk.
Students must select a minimum of 1 fruit or vegetable + 2 other items to be considered a lunch meal. Students are encouraged to take all 5 components (entree, grain, fruit, vegetable & milk). All students will be charged for ala carte purchases, just as they always have been.
Families are still encouraged to submit free/reduced meal applications to ensure that they do not lose their free/reduced status at the conclusion of this statewide policy. This is very important, as funding for this statewide policy will expire on June 30, 2022.

Lost or Misplaced P-EBT Cards: If a family has accidentally thrown away the P-EBT card or has lost the card, the family should call Conduent (the P-EBT card vendor) at 1-866-386-3071 to request a replacement if the card is lost, stolen or damaged.
It is the same process SNAP customers do to replace the Ohio Direction EBT card. When the family calls, their old card will be locked, and a new card will be mailed to them. If the family finds their lost card, they will not be able to use it once they have reported it lost or stolen.
The family will have to wait to receive the replacement card in the mail, which can take 7-10 days. Additional information to share with families on how to replace a lost or misplaced card is available on the P-EBT website.

SCAC Continuing to Help Community Families In Need
Springboro Schools will continue providing meals to families on a routine basis, during the school year. Students who are on Free/Reduced Lunch or apart of the “Boro Backpack Program” will still be able to receive food thanks to the Springboro Community Assistance Center (SCAC). Springboro Schools has been in contact directly with these families, regarding details on food pickup and distribution.
Free/Reduced Lunch with Springboro Schools:
Mondays (3:00 - 4:00pm)*
Springboro Community Assistance Center (SCAC)
1629 S. Main St. Springboro, OH 45066
Perishable, Meats, Dairy, Cleaning Supplies, & Boxed Food Only
Please know the SCAC is here to help all families that are in need. We understand there are a lot of families that have not used a food pantry before, and this can be uncomfortable, at first.
Also, the Springboro Community Assistance Center (SCAC) will provide further details on their Facebook page.
