Tornado Relief Efforts: Final Week for Fundraiser

Springboro Schools and the Springboro Community are in the final week of a district-wide fundraiser for Trotwood-Madison City Schools, in order to contribute to the continued tornado relief efforts.

At the Sept. 12 Board of Education meeting, three members of the Trotwood-Madison City Schools' Board of Education, Denise Moore (Board President), Vanessa Jeter-Freeman (Board Vice President), and Myra Bozeman (Board Member) met with members of the Springboro Schools' Board of Education.

As of this writing, Springboro Schools has raised more than $24,000 for Trotwood-Madison City Schools between individual school building fundraisers and Panther Pride/#DaytonStrong t-shirt sales. In addition, $2,000 was donated by the Springboro Optimist Club, as well as a $10,000 donation from the Christ Church United Methodist. Overall, more than $36,000 has been raised for the tornado relief efforts to aid Trotwood-Madison City Schools.

Each of the six (6) school buildings in Springboro Schools are finishing up their own type of fundraiser, which took place on various days over the past month. All donations officially come to a close this Friday, Sept. 27th. The specifics of these fundraisers are outlined on our web page under the "How Can I Help?" section.

All monetary donations from each of the six (6) buildings are being put towards school uniforms for the more than two hundred (200) Trotwood-Madison City Schools' students who were displaced from their homes, as a result of the tornadoes that struck Trotwood, OH.

Civil War Battles
Mrs. Jordan’s Enriched Social Studies classes at SJHS researched and presented on individual Civil War battles. Each student group also had a diorama that recreated a scene from the battle they were researching, as part of the project.
Springboro High School Students Announced as Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, including six (6) Springboro High School students, in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Springboro High School students Adam Anspach, Alexander Berardi, Ryan Lin, Karoline Shellhause, Eva Singh, Carly Titus have all been named a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically talented high school students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Approximately 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2020. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2020 will be announced in four (4) nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 330,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

The ceremony was held at the 9/11 Memorial in Lebanon, OH.
SJHS Hears From It's Time 2's Founder

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, It’s Time 2’s founder, Dr. Brian Ceccarelli, spoke to Springboro Junior High School (SJHS). Dr. Ceccarelli's impactful presentation uses real stories to inspire young people to accept one another, treat each other with respect regardless of their perceived differences, empower students to make the right choices and to speak openly about the reality of bullying, mental health issues, and teen suicide.

Dr. Ceccarelli's presentation aligns with Springboro Schools' Character Educational/SEL initiative. The presentation was discovered by Stacey Cavanaugh, an SJHS teacher and member of the district's Character Education team. Cavanaugh met Dr. Ceccarelli during a weekend Jim Place training. Both Stacey Cavanaugh and Assistant Principal Randi Bargo-Smith attended and vetted one of Dr. Ceccarelli's presentations at a Centerville Middle School this past school year.

Magazine Art at Springboro Junior High School

3D Art classes, taught by Mrs. Crouse at Springboro Junior High School (SJHS), just completed a project using discarded magazines. The students rolled the individual pages with pencils, collecting several bins to use. Then, the students shaped the magazines into a wide array of designs, including a crochet basket, cartoon characters, and the SJHS building.

The assembly demands students to work together and exercise their creative thinking and imagination, while also instilling a good lesson on using discarded paper and magazines. A fun way to recycle and get creative!

Farm to Table Comes to SHS

"Farm to Table" comes to Springboro High School (SHS) as part of the district's partnership with the Warren County Career Center (WCCC). SHS students will be engaged in learning  to grow hydroponically, also known as aeroponics.  The system uses water, liquid nutrients, and a soil-less growing medium. This allows to quickly and efficiently grow vegetables and herbs to be used by students in their Family and Consumer Science Labs at Springboro High School.

Two students from Mr. Roderick's Civil Engineering class at SHS were tasked with putting together the Hydroponic Tower for Mrs. Harris' Global Foods class.
Springboro Schools Featured in Springboro Neighbors Magazine

Springboro Police Department App

In addition to the numerous safety/security measures conducted within the district, Springboro Schools would like to remind the public that the Springboro Police Department has an App for smartphones that could be used as another measure to keep our students safe.

The App has many functionalities, including receiving safety alerts, viewing press releases on criminal activity in the area, general public safety information, etc.

However, the one function students and parents might be most interested in is the "School Crime/Tip" button whereby anyone can anonymously send a message to our School Resource Officers to alert them to any known or suspected criminal activity that is occurring or planned at our schools. Simply tap that button and send a message directly to the police (You can also use that function to call the Police Department, as well).

The App can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple iTunes by simply searching, "Springboro Police Department."

Student Safety Reporting
If you believe your child is being bullied, harassed, or you suspect any type of suspicious behavior, contact your child’s principal or report the incident through our Student Safety Reporting System .
