Dear Parents and Families:
Spring is here and we are excited as we edge closer to the end of the academic year. I am incredibly proud of our students as they continue to seize every opportunity to be engaged and live out their Humanics philosophy. I also am incredibly proud of our faculty and staff who work tirelessly to provide an engaged learning environment for our students to thrive.

Study Abroad
Imagine your student studying abroad for the same cost as a semester on campus. With the Springfield College Study Abroad Program, students can choose from programs in more than 30 countries across six continents, pay tuition to the College, and apply their financial aid. These global experiences enable students to fulfill academic requirements while learning about different cultures, gaining intercultural and language skills, developing new perspectives, and deepening their understanding of themselves and their abilities. Students who study abroad develop greater self-confidence, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in diverse environments.
The International Center staff advises students to start planning a semester abroad as early as their first year, selecting study abroad as their themed exploration. They can get started by visiting Springfield College Study Abroad or attending the Study Abroad Fair on Monday, March 28, Noon-1:30 p.m. in the Flynn Campus Union Cafe area. The deadline to apply for summer 2022 or fall 2022 programs is April 1 and the deadline for spring 2023 is October 1. If your undergraduate student needs to stay on campus during any part of the summer for classes or on-campus employment, housing will be available in the Senior Suites and will cost $200 per week. Starting on Friday, March 25, students can submit their Summer 2022 Housing Application via their PrideNET account (under “Access My Housing”).
The priority deadline for undergraduate summer housing is Monday, May 6, 2022, but applications will be accepted on a rolling basis after this date. Assignments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis as space allows. This same process and timeline apply to any seniors who will be continuing at Springfield College for an advanced degree and planning to live on campus in graduate housing for the fall.

The Road Back to Activities
Staff from the Office of Student Activities recently hosted a leadership conference on campus called Leadership Lock-in, themed, “The Road Back to Me.” The pandemic has caused many students to pause and re-evaluate what they have lost during this time. The conference looked at ways to regain and refocus on the things they want to get back and how they can begin to move forward towards their goals.
Speaking of the need to get things back…the weather is getting warmer and that means some of our more beloved traditions are just around the corner. Events include Stepping Up Day, Sti-Yu-Ka, the Spring Concert, Student Government Association Club/Organization Leadership Awards Ceremony, Vagina Monologues, PeachFest, Springfield College Dance Marathon Celebration, SC Dancers Show, and many more. Please encourage your students to join in on the fun and learning. They can find these and other activities on our programming calendar and our athletic calendar.

Black History Month
For Black History Month, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) hosted several events for students and the wider campus community. These included a lunch catered by a local Black-owned restaurant, A Taste of Soul Food, and a talk by Vice President for Student Affairs Slandie Dieujuste, PhD, about the Haitian diaspora and the complexities of thriving between cultures. The DEI also hosted a presentation by Rev. Terrlyn Curry Avery, PhD, titled, “The Black Church: Friend or Foe to the Community?” this past month, as well as a talk by Sekou Franklin, PhD, called, “The World Beyond the Campus: Black Youth Activism and the Reconstruction of America.”

COVID Updates
The College is continuing with our free optional COVID testing for all students and employees for the spring semester. While testing provides a “snapshot” in time, we hope this information helps students feel more confident they are doing all they can to protect their family, friends, and campus community. All testing will take place in our testing center (239 Wilbraham Ave.).
- Mondays: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Wednesdays: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Thursdays: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Results should be available 24-36 hours following the test. As a reminder, if your student is feeling ill, please encourage them to not go to class and engage in activities. Have them consult the Health Center staff or their primary care provider.

A few weeks ago, we became aware of the Stanford University women's soccer goalie, Katie Meyer, who died by suicide. From all indications, there were very few signs she was struggling with her mental health when her parents spoke to her just hours before her death. It is scary when you know what is happening with your student and terrifying when you don’t know what is going on with them.
Here are steps that can be taken that might be able to help someone who is struggling with suicidal thoughts, even if we don't know about it.
