Springfield Community/Senior Center Temporary Location Secured
I am excited to report that after a several year search for a suitable temporary location, County staff have been able to secure a temporary location for the Springfield Community Resource Center at the site of the former Dress Barn at Huntsman Square. It took quite a while to come to an agreement with Giant, the neighboring business, on the terms of the design of the space. We are now in the process of creating the plans for design and buildout of the temporary location to make sure the location meets County standards and the needs of senior center and community programming. Moving forward, there will be community engagement opportunities where we will welcome feedback on what will be the best way to utilize this space.
While this is a temporary site, it is critically important for our seniors and community to have a consistent space to utilize until the permanent location is finalized. The process of finding a space suitable for developing a permanent Springfield Community Resource Center has been ongoing for years. The permanent facility is slated for the Fall 2026 bond after being delayed for multiple reasons, including the pandemic. In the meantime, I worked with staff to find a temporary facility that can serve the ongoing needs of our seniors and community while we get the funding approved by the voters and find the best location for the permanent facility. More details to come on both the temporary and permanent facilities.

Public Hearing To Extend Pandemic Outdoor Dining
During the pandemic, County staff came up with the great plan to temporarily allow restaurants to utilize additional outdoor space without individual approvals in order to accommodate CDC guidelines. This measure helped save many dining establishments throughout the County and boosted a culture of outdoor dining. With the success of that temporary allowance and the popularization of eating outside, the County is looking to change that temporary measure to a permanent allowance with certain requirements in place. You can find more details here on the draft guidelines and see staff’s presentation from the last Land Use Committee meeting here. The public hearing will be in late summer/early fall, stay tuned for the date. I fully support the efforts to expand outdoor dining options in the county.

Shredding Events Being Hosted Near You!
My office has received many emails and calls about the cancellation of this year’s free County hosted shred events because of perceived equity issues, the County’s new zero waste policies and workforce shortages. Zencity’s Blockwise: Tool to Measure Public Sentiment Launched on June 1st
The Fairfax County Police Department is launching Zencity’s Blockwise, a new public survey tool used by dozens of leading police departments around the country, to understand local concerns, attitudes, and trust in police officers. The tool will enable FCPD to holistically understand local neighborhood safety issues, enhancing their responsiveness to community priorities.
According to Chief Davis - “This effort represents a belief that we can only improve what is measured. With this survey we will collect better data and be more responsive to the concerns and issues of our residents, in addition to our existing focus on reducing crime and disorder.”
Beginning on June 1st, the survey will gather responses from residents in multiple languages. The survey will appear to residents through the use of digital ads in various locations such as news websites, social media platforms and other applications.
|
In addition to My90, which is a post incident survey, Blockwise will assist in obtaining public sentiment about the FCPD as well as feelings about crime and the fear of crime. Based on responses, the survey will measure resident satisfaction regarding residents’ feeling of safety and trust in police while also identifying key concerns residents want the Fairfax County Police Department to address. Additionally, this feedback from the community can help FCPD align their community engagement efforts with the community’s expectations.
In keeping with FCPD’s commitment to transparency, the survey results will be shared with the public quarterly as they become available and published on the Department’s website. Zencity ensures the security and privacy of its data and survey respondents. Survey responses are anonymous unless a respondent chooses to share their email address for follow-up purposes. Regardless, survey responses are kept confidential. Zencity does not collect a respondent’s name, address, or any other personally identifying information.

Sidewalk Along Eastbound Fair Lakes Circle to be Closed for Approximately Three Months
The sidewalk along eastbound Fair Lakes Circle (on the south side of the roadway) between the Fair Lakes Shopping Center entrance and the end of the sidewalk just before Roger Stover Drive closed on May 31, until approximately August 31 to allow for construction of a new shared-use path as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Pedestrians will be directed to use the sidewalk along westbound Fair Lakes Circle (on the north side of the roadway). Travel lanes on eastbound Fair Lakes Circle previously were shifted and reduced to one eastbound through-lane for work reconfiguring Fair Lakes Circle between the intersection with Fair Lakes Shopping Center/Shoppes Lane to the west and Fair Lakes Parkway to the east. When complete, there will be a travel lane and turn lanes on eastbound Fair Lakes Circle for vehicles, and more than a half-mile of new shared-use path for pedestrians, cyclists, and other trail users. This new path will provide improved connections between homes, shopping, and offices in the Fair Lakes area.
The new shared-use path is part of the new 66 Parallel Trail between Dunn Loring and Centreville. Learn more about the 66 Parallel Trail and other multi-modal improvements being built by the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project here.

AJ is a friendly, active young dog who is always happy and ready to play! Has decent manners when taking toys, and loves getting pets and scratches from his human buddies. He can come on kind of strong so we will require an introduction to potential doggy siblings to make sure it's a good match. He would love to find an active adopter who will take him on kinds of adventures, help him learn some basic obedience, and give him plenty of time for play! If you'd like to meet Aj, visit here for more information.
