Springtime = Yard Work

Easing Back Into Your Routines:

Springtime is here!!! That's doesn't mean SPRING into yard work! Really try to ease yourself back into your spring/summertime routines to avoid injuries. Here are a few important things to remember for when you get motivated to start:

Pace yourself!  It feels great to be outside after being cooped up all winter, but really take it easy. If you have not been out for a while ease yourself back into your activities. The easiest way to hurt yourself is by doing too much too soon.

Stretch!  Include your back, neck, legs and arms. Simple range of motion movements and a few toe touches help to loosen up your muscles. Don't know how to stretch properly? Make an appointment with Jena in our Exercise Rehab Department! She'll make sure you have proper form, set you up with a solid routine and even send you home with a few printouts!

Hydrate!  Bring your water with you to the garden, while mowing the lawn, playing with the kiddos, working in the garage, etc. Staying hydrated can help prevent injuries.

Lift properly!  Moving things around the garage/shed, getting out the bicycle, carrying your golf bag or lifting heavy bags of soil can create stress to your back. Make sure you have proper form when doing these tasks! Remember to lift with your legs and not your back!

Pushing & Pulling!  Just as you do not want to lift anything too heavy, be prepared when you are pushing or pulling.  Know how heavy the item is, and if it is too much for you, ask for help or break jobs into smaller tasks.

No Stooping ! If you are weeding, planting, raking leaves or doing any other activities where you might find yourself stooping, then be sure to use your knees, kneel on a pad, or even invest in knee pads.  If you can, try to sit while potting new plants or cutting low shrubs.  The most common way to injure your lower back is by locking your knees, bending and lifting.

See your chiropractor regularly!  A healthy back is a happy back and less likely to be injured.
