In Loving Memory of John Reisdorf | |
John J. Reisdorf, beloved Habitat volunteer, passed away March 15, 2024, at his home in Aptos, at the age of 82.
John was among a team of dedicated construction volunteers aptly referred to as the “Golden Hammer Crew,” a group of experienced, skilled volunteers who have assisted at Habitat build sites, side-by-side, each Tuesday (enticed by coffee and donuts), since the first Habitat home builds in Santa Cruz County, more than four decades ago.
For 30 years, John was employed at Mountain View Los Altos High School as a Drafting and Wood Shop Instructor. Soon after, in 2005, John began his service with Habitat, assisting with a home build project in Scotts Valley. He continued to volunteer at additional builds on Frederick St., Harbor Dr., a 7-home development on Los Esteros Ct., and Habitat’s current 11-home development, Rodeo Creek Court (RCC), on Harper St. As a respected, highly skilled member of the esteemed Golden Hammer Crew, John contributed thousands of hours of his personal time and talent in support of Habitat’s mission to provide housing to qualified low income families in our community.
| |
Inspired by the American Arts and Crafts movement, John created unique, exquisitely crafted inlaid wood boxes. A keepsake box was presented to each RCC family to commemorate the dedication of their new home. The box housed the keys to their “Home Sweet Home.” A treasure, beyond measure.
May 8, at The Cocoanut Grove, the Golden Hammers will receive a Be the Difference Award from the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County. John will be recognized, in honorarium, as a member of this dynamic, extraordinary team, bound by camaraderie, jocularity, and a sense of purpose.
Habitat is grateful for John’s unwavering volunteer service. We extend our sincere sympathy and condolences to John’s wife, Judy, his children, Jill and Jack, and his many friends.
