Where You Live Matters
Fannie Mae’s Sustainable Communities Innovation Challenge Grant supports Yachad's Asthma Home Visiting and Remediation Work
Yachad's continuing partnership with Children's National is providing critical relief to both tenants and homeowners where poor housing conditions are exacerbating health concerns. This partnership, supported by Fannie Mae’s Sustainable Communities Innovation Challenge Grant, was highlighted in Fannie Mae's recent housing publication. The Asthma Home Visiting Program at Yachad has provided crucial housing remediation services to over 75 families over the past 18 months. With COVID restrictions beginning to ease this spring, we hope to provide greater remediation services to some of these families.
Check it Out! Yachad has a New Website!
It was time. "Who would read our website on their phone?," asked Executive Director, Audrey Lyon, over eight years ago when we were designing our first website. The answer would turn out to be "everybody."

Thanks to our new donation platform, FLIPCAUSE, we have revamped our website, easily at little cost. We hope you will find the site easier to access, to sign up to volunteer and of course, donate to our good work.
Thank You to our Volunteers
Yachad volunteers are working behind-the-scenes lightening the workload for our staff. We are grateful.

Volunteers are working as Housing Navigators taking home repair applications from DC homeowners who are referred to us from our partner nonprofit, Lydia’s House. We have taken over 60 applications from families seeking our services.

Volunteer housing inspectors are helping us out with inspections, a crucial part of our application process. We appreciate having experienced people helping to assess the work that needs to be done.

I would really like to thank all of the lovely people who came out to help renovate my home. It meant so much to me. Thank you so very much. God Bless. --Yachad Homeowner

The impact Yachad has on the families you serve is clear and we were honored to be a part of it. --Synagogue Sponsor

Sukkot in Spring sponsorships are an important piece of the financial puzzle we put together to insure homes are made safe and functional. Consider sponsoring a home repair project this year. Unfortunately volunteers are not able to work inside homes this year. However, some outdoor projects may be available. We promise to put all of our volunteers to work next year.

Thank you to our partners:

Homeowner Spotlight:
“We just want our kids to enjoy their childhood.” Ms. Fennell-Hawkins, Homeowner

The Fennell-Hawkins family tried for years to remedy the basement flooding in their D.C. home that was impacting the health of their three sons with asthma. The water damage created mold, causing serious asthma attacks, leading them to Children’s National for medical treatment and then to Yachad for housing remediation services.

Late last year we partnered with Team Rubicon, military veterans who provide volunteer disaster relief. These volunteers removed the mold-infested basement drywall and flooring—approximately 600 pounds of debris. TenleyTown Trash donated trash removal services.
Unfortunately rain water still seeped into the basement.
This spring, thanks to Emanuel Lawncare and Construction LLC, the backyard was regraded and reseeded and the water infiltration issue seems to be solved. The family also received a new central air and heating system, a hot water tank, and refrigerator through Yachad's work with the District's Department of Energy & Environment.

Special thank you to HandyMensch Frank Zappala for all his great work.
