Accessible Upgrades at Bear Mountain

Perkins memorial platform after Spring 2024 construction and planting

The Conservancy is dedicated to making recreation in our region more accessible people with disabilities. Last fall we completed phase 1 of the Perkins Observation Platform and All Person’s Trail renovations at Bear Mountain State Park.

The Observation Platform offers the iconic panoramic views of the Hudson Valley and NYC skyline, without requiring visitors to climb the stairs at Perkins Tower. We resurfaced the area with ADA-compliant gravel, created additional seating, and added local stone and native plants to better harmonize with Bear Mountain’s natural landscape.

This year we'll launch Phase 2 with plans for improved signage and increased plantings to further enrich the landscape. These improvements ensure the iconic vistas and the historic Appalachian Trail can be enjoyed by more visitors, including those with limited mobility. Help us continue to steward our public spaces and ensure they are welcoming and resilient for generations to come. Support Phase 2 by donating today!
