GoodbyeSpruill Says Goodbye: Norman Citron 1926-2014
Spruill has lost a long time student and friend.  Norm Citron died in his home in Atlanta, GA, on Monday, April 21, 2014. A member of the Spruill family since 1997, Norm was a devoted student and artist who took over 100 classes. He formed relationships with many of our students, instructors, and staff.  Last year, in the summer of 2013, his work was showcased in our first annual Student and Faculty Juried Show.

We will miss him most sincerely and would like to pass our condolences on to his family for their loss. Donations in his honor may be made to the Chastain Art Center, the Spruill Center of the Arts, the MJCCA Weinstein Pre-school, or the B'nai Torah Pre-school.

Arrangements are by Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care, Atlanta, GA. Sign the online guest book at www.edressler.com

InstructorInstructor Spotlight: Ken Horvath
Bio:
Spruill Center Ceramics Department Director, Ken Horvath, has been working and teaching in the ceramics field for over thirty years. His primary focus is on wheel thrown forms, surface design, and glaze manipulation.

Ken's classes emphasize the importance of controlling clay through utilizing methods and techniques he has developed during his many years of teaching and creating his own work. These techniques insure the rapid skill development and confidence that Ken's students experience, resulting in their enjoyment of throwing on the wheel, developing sensitivity to the medium and finding their own style.

Ken's work has been shown in national and international exhibits, and he has pieces in numerous public and private collections. He also won Best in Show for the 2013 Student and Faculty Juried Exhibition. Under Ken's supervision, the Ceramics department has become one of the best ceramics studios in Atlanta. This weekend, he will be managing the Pottery & Art Sale.

New Instructors:

Lauren Adams- Painting, course listings

Lauren Adams is a contemporary Southern artist. Born and raised in rural Georgia, she has resided in Atlanta since 1992. Although she formally trained as a commercial illustrator at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Lauren spent more than a decade owning and operating a successful decorative painting business before obtaining her M.F.A. in painting at SCAD-Atlanta.

Working primarily in acrylic and oil on canvas and gouache on paper, Lauren's art works run the gamut from traditional portraiture, still life and landscape, to large-scale paintings that are a hybrid of abstraction and realism.

Azizi Blissett- Creative Expression, course listings

Armed with the gift of imagination and a desire to encourage creative expression and thinking, Azizi is the embodiment of a 21st century creative change agent. Her mission is to use her passion, energy and enthusiasm to inspire young aspiring creative artists, at risk youth and women.  A native of St. Louis, Azizi is the daughter of two talented reggae musicians and creative artists. Her creative passions stem from early childhood listening to her parent's band perform original Reggae music and rhythms throughout various local and international venues. She is the product of their creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and community-mindedness.

After a successful career in corporate America, Azizi made a very courageous decision to switch careers from business marketing at a leading computer company to pursue a career in advertising. She was rewarded for this brave move as she developed and produced countless Broadcast TV and Print content for major corporations in the industry. She received an Atlanta Addy Award for a Publix Black History Month Consumer Print Ad honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Jason Espey- Drawing & Painting, course listings

Jason Espey, was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1980. Jason works primarily in oil paint, charcoal and graphite. He is recently relocated from Philadelphia, PA where he completed the Professional Program at Studio Incamminati, was awarded a Fellowship and taught high school drawing at Doane Academy. GreenHelp Us Save Some Green

We are aware that many of you primarily use the website to view our course catalog and may no longer wish to receive the paper catalog.  If you would like to be removed from the paper catalog mailing list, please email Anne Winn.  Not only would this action save paper and trees, it will also help us with our mailing costs each quarter.

Due to changes in our budget and the use of paper products around The Center, we will no longer be providing paper towels to the classrooms.  Please bring paper towels with you to class.

Hopefully, a few changes will help us be a little greener (in more ways than one)!
