BC Jesters raise nearly $4000 for Building the Future Fund
The BC Jesters, a group of squash players/contributors/supports raised close to $4,000 at their recent Doubles Calcutta held at VLTBC on June 14.

Organized by Morgan Latremouille, 16 players were auctioned off with all proceeds going to Squash BC’s Building the Future Fund.

In the final, Madeline Sava and Morgan Latremouille defeated Karen Levine and Robert Pacey by the slimmest of margins, 15-14 in the deciding game!

According to Hugh Woolley (current BC Jesters Treasurer):

“This year the Jesters Club chose to donate the funds raised from our annual Doubles Calcutta to the Building the Future Fund to support Squash B.C.’s initiative to address the problems that grassroots recreational squash is experience across the province.

Unfortunately, squash courts are closing at a faster rate than they are being built and if this trend continues there will be fewer locations where newcomers can be introduced to our game. Although high quality junior squash has never been stronger in the province, this player development is restricted to only a handful of clubs.

Revitalizing squash in all regions of the province to ensure courts will continue to be maintained is crucial to the long term success of our game.”

Doug Hawkes (Jun 21-22)

On another beautiful June weekend the Juniors at the Cedar Hill Squash Club helped run the 5th annual Doug Hawkes No Frills Summer tournament.

Christian Yuen, Maxx Yuen, Kellan O’Neill spent Friday evening and all day Saturday running the court control, updating draws and keeping the tournament running smoothly and on time!

At the end of the weekend this year’s event raised just over $1000.00 for the Doug Hawkes Jr Fund.

Winners:

·          Division 1 winner was Grace Thomas 3 - 0 over Gavin Maxwell. In this final Gavin’s bag of tricks were no match for Grace.
·          Division 2 winner was none other that Lukas Wenzel 3 - 2 over Joseph Weinerman. I would usually say that the Junior has the advantage in the future but both these two are improving weekly. I’m sure we will hear more from both of them in the future
·          Division 3 winner Ronan Brookes 3 - 2 over Eric Donatelli. Great job by both of these players with a great show of sportsmanship
·          Womens Division winner Kathryn Herring 3 - 0 over the returning player Kristen Iverson. Kathryn was out to show her strength this weekend and determined to win. It is good to welcome Kristen back to BC and on court again

Thank you to the volunteers that set up for the annual BBQ so that all could enjoy Master Chefs Urmas and Gary’s hot dog and burger BBQ.

Most importantly, if you get the chance, stop by Fairways Market (Locally owned and operated in Victoria) to thank them for donating the food to the BBQ!
2019 Squash Summer Tour

Squash BC was pleased to offer the 2019 Squash Summer Tour to our member clubs in the Okanagan and the Kootenay. This was an excellent opportunity to provide 6 squash facilities with coaching clinics for players of all ages and skill levels.

Michael Thompson and Joey Gingold wanted to give back to the squash community in BC by supporting clubs and their members. Through one on one play, coaching clinics, and exhibition matches, Michael, a former Canadian Junior Champion and certified coach, alongside fellow Drexel University squash teammate Joey, did just that. Not only did they meet local squash players to learn about the impact of the sport across BC, but Michael and Joey also shared their passion and expertise with the community.

Michael and Joey visited Kamloops (July 2), Revelstoke (July 3), Calgary (July 6-7), Nelson (July 9), Vernon (July 10), and are finishing off in Kelowna (July 11-12).

So far, the 2019 Summer Tour has been a great success. From beginners to intermediates, participants have joined us from all across BC and have had the opportunity to drop in for a few hours and participate in a fun, social event.

Squash BC would like to thank all of the participants for their hospitality and for welcoming us into your community while supporting the Squash Summer Tour.

The 2019 Pan Am Games are fast approaching, as top squash players from across the Americas have just under a month to prepare themselves, physically and mentally, for the competition in Lima, Peru.

Six of Canada’s world-class squash players will be representing the Great White North at the multi-sport games, all of whom are past Canadian Champions.
Canadian Junior Open 2019 - Squash Canada and the Club at White Oaks are pleased to announce some significant enhancements to the Canadian Junior Open to be held December 6-10, 2019 in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

In 2018, the Canadian Junior Open grew to 304 athletes from Canada and around the World, making it the largest in the events history. But it was the fact that almost 30 additional athletes never made it off the wait list and were unable to participate that prompted a review of the event.
