Two BC Women Crowned Emerging Female Leaders in the BC Squash Community

Two British Columbian women have been recognized as Champions of women's squash in the province. Elsa Snyder of Vancouver (
Bentall Centre Athletic Club ) and Rebecca Vassilakakis of Nelson ( Nelson Squash Club ) were both named as emerging female leaders in the sport of squash, with each of their clubs being recipients of a $500 grant award from the Squash BC Emerging Female in Squash program.

The grants are to be used by the clubs to promote and deliver squash programs for girls and women through the calendar year (2019).
This program was established in 2018 to attract and retain women and girls in squash. Clubs were encouraged to nominate a female ambassador who is committed to promoting the sport to girls and women at their respective clubs. Eligibility for the grant program was open to clubs who participated in the September 2018 Women's Squash Week.
"We realized that one way to increase participation was to encourage the clubs to identify a female champion to work with the pros in promoting Women's Squash Week. The result was tremendous, with a 66% increase in participation in 2018," said Sue Griffin, Chair Women's Squash Week.
Over the past 20 years female participation in sport in Canada has continued to decline and Squash BC has also been impacted by this downward trend. "Reversing this decline is a major priority for our organization and growth initiatives such as the Emerging Female Leader in Squash and strategic partnerships with organizations such as ProMOTION Plus and Buntain Insurance directly align with our sport association's mission and strategic direction" said Natasha Doucas, President of Squash BC.
The Emerging Female Leader in Squash program is presented by Squash BC in partnership with ProMOTION PLUS and Buntain Insurance.

About ProMOTION PLUS: ProMOTION Plus is British Columbia's organization for girls and women in physical activity and sport. ProMOTION Plus is only one of three provincial organizations in Canada whose sole focus is dedicated to working with community partners to increase participation and leadership opportunities for girls and women in the sport and recreation delivery system.
About Buntain Insurance: For nearly 50 years, Buntain Insurance has been a family owned and operated full-service Insurance Brokerage committed to meeting our clients' needs.

Squash BC Canada Winter Games Team brings home silver

The 2019 Canada Winter Games has finished with Team BC finishing with the most gold medals ever in a winter games with a total 30. BC won 87 medals at these games, just shy of the 88 it won in both 2015 (a home games) and 2011.
Supporting that medal win was BC's own squash team where both men's and women's teams took home silver medals. In the women's final, team Ontario and team British Columbia created exciting performances as they split their matches 2-2 and it came down to a tiebreaker for the gold medal.
Lucia Bicknell Captures Gold in the Women's Final Match
Sixteen-year old Lucia Bicknell of North Vancouver outshone Ontario's Charlotte Orcutt on the last day of the multi-sport competition to capture the Gold medal crown in the girls' finals.
"The defeat of Ontario on the women's side over two consecutive days is one of the Team BC's highlights in these Games," said Kevin Inouye, coach for the BC junior squash team, "Ontario had a very strong men's and women's field so Lucia's performance is nothing less than outstanding".
Team BC on the women's side consisted of Cindy Cao (Richmond), Sarah Cao, Richmond, Yu Quan Ng (Richmond) and Lucia Bicknell (West Vancouver).
Over on the men's division, Team BC's Matt Bicknell (West Vancouver), Sam Scivier (Vancouver), James Toth (Richmond) and Gabriel Yun (Richmond) lost 0-4 to Ontario to gain BC another silver medal.

As funding from government and other sources becomes less predictable, it is important to find alternative ways to ensure a sound financial future for the sport of squash. The income accumulated through the 2020 Fund is used to promote the growth of the game through the development of junior squash. By establishing a vibrant and well-financed junior program, Squash BC will take a major step toward a successful future for the sport in this province. To donate to the 2020 Fund, click here.
