2019 Gamble Doubles 100/75
Entry deadline Nov 27, 7pm
Vancouver Racquets Club is hosting the annual Gamble 100 & 75 Doubles Tournament which runs Dec 3 to 7 in honour of former VRC member Ross Gamble.

The tournament uses a handicap system based on the combined ages of the team. 
With a Calcutta auction, exhibition match, social activities and more, this tournament is full of fun!

The tournament has always been a charity event with the Gamble 100 running for 29 years and the Gamble 75 for 8 years.

The $65 entry includes GST and a $20 donation to Autism Speaks Canada. Enter soon as entries are limited!
Pacific Coast Open Doubles 2020
Vancouver Racquets Club is pleased to host the 49th Pacific Coast Open Doubles Championships, January 24 -26, 2020 in beautiful British Columbia!

The tournament which rotates between Vancouver, Portland and San Francisco, brings together doubles enthusiasts from the West.

This is always a great event with a lot of teams following the tri-city tour and a lot of great competition!

Doubles Officiating Clinic!
Squash "Offi"icionados, Brian Covernton and Greg Desaulniers, will be running the annual doubles officiating clinic on Jan 18th, 2020 from 9 am to 1 pm at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club.

* Learn the rules of doubles squash and start the process to becoming a certified referee.
* There will be a powerpoint presentation with lots of discussion and questions.
* A written exam will be completed by all participants and reviewed at the clinic - everyone passes!
* Once one completes the clinic and exam, the participant will become a certified provincial referee after passing a practical test by refereeing a league or tournament match with a National Referee assessing the participant.

A pass will be achieved if the participant applies the rules consistently and is able to make 10 correct calls and keep proper score.

* Cost is $10.00 (cash at the door) which includes coffee and muffins, rule book, guidelines and some referee tips.
Congratulations to Ruth Castellino for being chosen as a Can-Am Cup Captain!
Squash Canada announced the Captains for the 2020 Can-Am Cup, a doubles team event that will take place in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Congratulations to Ruth Castellino who, along with Al Hunt, will be the Canadian Captains for the Can-Am Cup.

Said Mike Letourneau, Chair of the Squash Canada Doubles Committee, “Ruth and Al are outstanding individuals who enjoy the respect of all who meet them. They have won many doubles titles over the years and epitomize sportsmanship in all aspects of the game of squash. Ruth and Al will be outstanding Can-Am Cup Captains."

Ruth was the recipient of the 2019 Jack Larsen Trophy, Squash BC's highest award, in recognition of her significant contribution to the development of squash in the province.
Women & Girls in Squash
The VSL invited all Women’s Squash players to a public forum facilitated by Squash BC on Nov 25th.

Richard Yendell, the new VSL Coordinator, introduced himself to a packed room of 40 engaged and active Women league players.
Vancouver Squash League Women's Forum
After outlining VSL's vision and identifying various stakeholders involved in VSL, Richard tabled a variety of ideas and initiatives on how to sustain and grow women's squash in Vancouver and a lively discussion ensued.

The session was the first step of a consultative process to gather feedback about potential adjustments to VSL. Ideas and initiatives included:

  • Divisional alignment
  • Team/Club composition
  • New Opportunities for Play

Richard is finalizing the meeting minutes and will send them to all Women VSL players along with the slide deck. Further feedback will be gathered, details fleshed out, and resource requirements and timelines to implement initiatives determined. Any adjustments and initiatives will need to be tabled with the VSL Board for review /approval.

The Faces of Women in Squash is dedicated to highlighting the broad spectrum of female squash players in British Columbia.

Nelson No Frills 2019
A tonne of fun!
The Nelson Squash Club held its annual fall classic squash tournament now named the "NO FRILLS TOURNAMENT " Nov 22-24th with 49 players from Vancouver, Kelowna, Vernon Trail, Castlegar, Cranbrook and of course Nelson .

It was a fantastic weekend of squash and social gathering with players battling it out and most matches going the distance !

Not only were the matches long and filled with excitement and adrenaline, but so was the social with the lounge packed as usual Friday and Saturday until the wee hours :)

A big thank you to all that participated and we hope to see you at our spring classic event held March 7-9th 2020.

Junior Pathways
Squash BC has partnered with our member club coaches and pros to develop, implement and support a vibrant Junior Pathways Development Program that encourages kids to take up the sport, helps them develop their skills and progressively introduces them to competition.
Developing Event @ VRC
11 kids had a great time at this Junior Pathway event run by Andrew Mount and Shawn Zwierzchowski at the Vancouver Racquets Club Club.

The event involved: skills acquisition, drills, coach assessment and cooperative play with a focus on skills execution!
Progressive Event @ Jericho Dec 1 (1-4 pm)
This mini-tournament for juniors new to the tournament squash scene where they will be introduced to proper match play, reffing, and good sportsmanship habits.
The first hour allows will include timed games and round robin (allowing kids to play everyone and coaches to 'seed' kids into groups).

The remaining time will involve competitive play based on the results of groupings, playing 2-3 matches.
The Junior Pathway Program is funded through the 2020 Fund. Income accumulated through this endowment fund is used to promote the growth of the game through the development of junior squash. To donate to the 2020 Fund, click here .
Coaching & Officiating
Foundations Coaching Course (Victoria, Jan 10-12, 2020)
In recent years many BC Squash Coaches and Instructors have retired or made moves to other parts of the country or the world (Steve Lawton, Larry Armstrong, Chris Hanebury, Drew Henderson, just to name a few).

Coaches are one of the pillars to our squash community -- enabling players to reach their greatest athletic potentials.

It is critical to have a thriving coaching community to support our great game. So Squash BC is asking you to consider helping out by becoming a Certified Squash Instructor!

Squash BC is offering this Coaching Foundations Course which is the first technical squash coaching course required to achieve certification.

The course will be conducted by Head Pro Ben Uliana at the Cedar Hill Squash Club in Victoria from Jan 10-12, 2020.

This course in combination with the applicable Multi-Sport Modules and
Coaching Evaluation will result in you being a Certified Squash Instructor or Certified Squash Assistant.

The cost includes the materials for the course, and the cost of the evaluation at a later date.

Get the Basics! Take the Squash Canada Online Officiating Course
Squash Canada Online Officiating Course ($35, about 1 hour to complete) includes   HD videos of challenging Referee decisions that help you become a better Referee. 

When you pass the online test at the end (80% to pass), you will be certified as a Squash Canada Club Referee.

Note: BC players' match results from SportyHQ are imported over to Club Locker on scheduled dates to maintain national rankings.
Pilot for New Singles National Rankings System Released
Squash Canada is pleased to release its pilot of a new national rankings system for singles.

The new rankings system will list players in descending order of their Club Locker player rating within any given category. The player’s rating will be based upon thousands of match results entered into Club Locker over the past 16 months.
