Tom's notes: Arlen Roth? Are you kidding me? Guitar LEGEND! Question... have you toured with Dylan? I haven't. I'm guessing you haven't. Guess who has... ARLEN ROTH! Add to that Levon Helm, John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Ry Cooder.... What what!?!? Yeah. In the bizz this show is what we call a, "get!" Don't miss this one!

This guitar legend is considered one of the most influential guitarists of all time, Arlen has toured the world with countless acts and recording with them as well. This includes artists such as Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Levon Helm, Ry Cooder, John Sebastian, Janis Ian, Eric Andersen, The Bee Gees and so many more. An evening with
Dr. Sick Sextette
Featuring Members Of The Squirrel Nut Zippers!
06/03/2018, 7:30 pm

Tom's Notes: First off... 3 of the fellas in this band are also in, The Squirrel Nut Zippers. TRUE STORY! So the musicianship on this show will be off the hook. I met Sick in Austin, TX many moons ago at an after party. I had my bass on shoulder and he walked in the room fiddle in hand. He says, "This one is in G, starts on the five, is your standard one, six, four, five and has a bridge that follows the circle of 4ths until it resolves on the five."
Thinking I was clever I quoted, "I was told there would be no math..." to which he instantly responded, "Chevy Chase, Saturday Night Live, 1979 impression of Gerald Ford. Nice work, now let's hit it."
It was then that I instantly realized the man had earned his nickname. He's one of the SICKEST musicians in town hands down. Yes... he's a fiddle player, but I also saw him once entertain an audience for 10 minutes straight just randomly thumping a bass solo as well. This is a "Tom's Pick Must See!"

His BIO:
DR SICK is a man of many words, hats, talents, and names. Known far and wide as “FiddleKiller,” he is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, playing violin (and all other strings), guitar, piano, drums, harmonica, brass, and homemade instruments, to name a few. A powerful baritone singer and comic song writer, he is also an international announcer/emcee of burlesque, vaudeville, and circus variety shows. After honing his jazz and theater skills while performing for 3 years in the Asylum Street Spankers (Austin, TX), he took a new direction towards circus and burlesque, co-founding the Carousel Cabaret in 2006 (Austin, TX) and traveling as musical director with the 999 EYES Freakshow. He currently leads 3 bands in New Orleans (This Stunted Sextette, The Late Greats, The Bad Meters) and is full time member to others (The Salt Wives, The Rotten Cores, Russell Welch Hot Quartet, Cantiga, That Damned Band).
LOCAL FARE THIS WEEKEND
Nate Taylor,
Izzy Heltai,
Gillian Grogan
05/31/2018, 7 pm

Wanderer, wonderer, journeyman, folksinger — Nate Taylor fuses story and experience on a quest for connection through music — to people, to nature, to truth. Often compared to Nick Drake for his resonant fingerpicking, Taylor paints an ethereal soundscape with his soaring vocals that implores a kind of reverence for the moment. While a faithful steward of the Boston folk scene for much of the year, Taylor completed his third annual house show tour in 2017, affectionately titled There And Back Again, or TABA 2017, covering 8300 miles and living out his vision of community through music. In November 2017, Taylor released “A Love Story | Live From America,” a collection of five live recordings from TABA 2017. Join the adventure when Nate comes to your town in 2018.

Izzy Heltai is a folk singer-songwriter from Boston, Massachusetts. Izzy is an artist that concentrates on storytelling with emotional and sonic resonance; he accomplishes what’s at the heart of all successful storytelling-invoking the familiar, while capturing familiarity in a way that is unique, in a way that is specific to Izzy.

In the summer of 2017, Izzy was a finalist at Falcon Ridge Folk Festivals Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase in Hillsdale, NY and has also performed at Mass MoCa’s acclaimed Freshgrass Folk Festival two years running in both 2016 and 2017.

Gillian Grogan is a Cambridge based songwriter with a knack for weaving narratives. Global folk and Appalachian influences have pinned the proverbial blooms in the hair of New England's favorite street-side songstress. Gillian sings stories where Americana meets folk and steeps into soul, where finger picking builds and gets slapped back to silence. And vice versa.
HELEN Single Release Show w/Special Leo Son & The Q-Tip Bandits 06/02/2018, 7:00 pm

A band of brothers in the truest sense; HELEN is a trio comprised of three brothers from Somerville, raised on Led Zeppelin, John Coltrane, the Meters, Sabbath and old school hip hop. Playing together since middle school, all confident front men in their own right, they are solid song writers, vocalists and instrumentalists. Seasoned through residencies as an acoustic duo, but with their older brother added on drums, a crushing rock trio. Masterful vocal harmonies and unparalleled playing ability, make HELEN, 2017's band to watch for. Don't miss this show!

Leo Son & The Q-Tip Bandits
Since their inception in early 2018, Leo Son & The Q-Tip Bandits have coalesced into a vibrant emerging act on the Boston music scene. Boasting a full-bodied, sweetly-flowing sound backed by the raw energy of rock and the colors of R&B and funk, they can make you sway and make you swoon. Claire Davis and Andrew Paolini hold down the grooves while Leo Son brings his mellifluous, soul-inspired riffs and moving lyrics to the front of the stage. Their sound will linger in your mind for days.
